Chapter 8

  • Anton’s eyes were glued to the mouth of his Beta, Abraham, who was talking about something. Anton was trying his hardest to concentrate because what Abraham was talking about was an important issue that needed to be taken care of, but his mind was somewhere more specifically on the little pregnant woman he bought yesterday for a hundred thousand dollars and brought home with him.
  • "I think it would be best if we prepare the warriors ahead. With the way the Twilight Pack is going, they are spilling blood. We cannot afford to take it lightly with them, Alpha." Abraham was saying but his brows were twitching as he felt like Anton was looking at him but not listening or registering any of what he was saying.
  • Abraham continued to talk anyway but when he asked a question and Anton was still looking at him without saying a word, Abraham paused and called his attention.
  • “Alpha?” After a few seconds he snapped his fingers in front of Anton’s face and called him in a firm voice, “Alpha, you are not even listening to me!”
  • Anton snapped out of the haze he was caught up in when he saw Abraham’s hand reaching for his face. His head snapped back and when his body stiffened he was quick to realize that he was not being attacked so he raced almost immediately.
  • “What’s the problem?” He snapped with furrowed brows.
  • “I’ve been talking to you for a while now but you are not listening to me.” Abraham complained. It was so strange to see Anton who was almost always on guard, who pays too much attention to detail and his environment, distracted and lost in his head.
  • Anton gave a low grunt, “Just repeat whatever it was that you said,”
  • Abraham’s eyes searched Anton’s but after a few seconds of being unable to read anything which did not come as a surprise because Anton was hard to read, Abraham repeated himself from the beginning.
  • Alpha Anton frowned slightly when Abraham was done taking. This time he refused to allow himself to get distracted by the thoughts of Kyra which was super hard. "Why are they spilling blood?"
  • "But, I just told you that..."
  • Anton stiffened when a new but welcoming scent filled his nostrils of jasmine. He did not have to turn to know who it was that was behind him. It was the same woman that caused him to have a sleepless night, the same woman who was still distracting him from what his beta was saying this morning.
  • Why would she be outside this early? It’s not even up to thirty minutes he selected a personal maid that would be sent to her because he saw yesterday that Kate did not like Kyra.
  • Has she clouded his thoughts so much like she clouded his head last night that he was even beginning to smell her everywhere?
  • "Is there anyone behind me?" Anton could not help but ask his beta. He knew that the maids in the palace were already up and about but their scents were insignificant to him.
  • “Behind you? Maids are everywhere” Abraham said without glancing behind Anton.
  • He frowned lightly. "You should have looked behind me as I asked you to instead of giving me a random response." Anton gritted out between clenched teeth. If he turned around by himself, it would be odd.
  • Alpha Anton watched as his Beta blinked at him in surprise but he did not care about what was going on in the other man’s head right now. He needed to figure out what was going on with him now and his strange behavior and heightened senses where Kyra was concerned. The way she affected him and his wolf from the first time he set his eyes on her was something that he couldn’t put into words even if he had tried to do so all night long.
  • Abraham glanced behind Anton then moved back a bit and whispered. "It’s the new slave you said that you got from the..."
  • "Leave!" Anton could not help but snap at Abraham, cutting him off mid-sentence.
  • With a bow, his Beta turned and hurried away.
  • Hearing Abraham call Kyra a slave did not sound nice to his ears. He had wanted to reach out and throttle Abraham so he had to snap at him to leave. What sort of violent reaction was that? What was going on with him?
  • Slowly, Anton turned to meet her, and their eyes caught. Time seemed to stand just then. But, why did it look like she was about to cry? The woman that he had brought home with him last night had not been a weak soul.
  • He was so sure of this because she had been super scared when she was presented in front of the alphas so was to be sold too but she held her chin up and refused to cower.
  • She had not even cried after she was sold but blinked back her tears and went with him, ignoring him through the ride back to his pack, and even telling him to to touch or call her beautiful when he had given his wolf the opportunity to take over and his wolf led him to her room.
  • This morning again, Anton found himself moving over to where she was now standing with her head that was bent as if he was in a daze.
  • Kyra shifted her gaze to him as he got closer. When he was finally five steps away from her, he noticed that some of the maids were eyeing her with contempt but they did not seem to have noticed him.
  • “You know, her father never liked her. What if she used her mate to kill him but did not know her mate was using her too?”
  • "Yeah, she was really sold by her own mate because she was a slut who couldn’t keep her legs close. Now she is pregnant with Alpha Tristan’s baby." one of them said with a scoff.
  • The rest laughed at the maid’s word and the fact they were oblivious of Anton made him more annoyed and his hands curled into fists at that.
  • "She is now acting as though this is her father’s pack. I can’t wait for the Alpha to take her away from the Luna’s quarters. Someone like her is not supposed to be sleeping there. She’s the most disgusting creature in the world and I hate her already. Ugh! So irritating," another mumbled.
  • Anton simply watched as Kyra looked at the maids in pain, and then her eyes came back to his before she turned around and fled from there.
  • Anton found himself wanting to rush after her but he needed to deal with the maids.
  • "Are you done?" He asked as he glanced around with eyes that were as cold as glaciers.
  • There was a loud gasp when they all turned and saw him standing behind them. They quickly bowed their heads in shame as they mumbled apologizes under their breath.
  • Alpha Anton looked at each of them in pure anger. But, even though they could not look up to meet his gaze, they shook like leaves.
  • "This would be the last time that you do something like this because I would not tolerate this nonsense. Kyra must be treated with the utmost respect. The next time I catch wind of news about her being mistreated, all of you will be punished" Anton warned in a deep voice as his eyes moved around.
  • "We are sorry, Alpha." They said as one.
  • "Shut up!" Alpha Anton snapped. The silence was deafening. He pulled at his shirt sleeve a bit before he looked at them. "Now get out of my sight."
  • The maids scrambled out of the hall like headless chickens. Alpha Anton didn’t care about them, instead, all his thoughts went back to Kyra who he was sure was not happy. He wondered if she was crying right now because of the insults that were thrown at her by the maids. With the way she had run out of there, she must have been devastated.
  • 'Should I go and see how she is doing?' He asked himself.
  • His wolf was unusually silent which didn’t help him one bit. Anton scratched his beard. He always knew what to do but it’s not been twenty-four hours since he brought his woman home and she was already causing him to be confused.
  • Alpha Anton’s brow deepened as he frowned his head came up blank. There was one thing he knew for sure, Kyra wouldn’t accept his sympathy if he offered it. She wouldn’t like to receive pity so it was better to leave her be. For now.
  • With a sigh, he turned around and walked out of the pack house. The sun was shining brightly, it was a lovely day so he decided to go for a ride to clear his thoughts. He was still unable to decide what he wanted with Kyra.
  • This was the first time in his life that he was confused about what to do.
