Chapter 23

  • Victoria still remembered clearly the day her mother came to this house. Abigail's face paled when she saw the figure at the door. The little girl didn't say a word, but her fear was palpable. Victoria knew exactly what was going through her daughter's mind. Abigail was scared. Afraid that her grandmother was coming to take them back to the place that had been a nightmare.
  • The fear lingered into the night. Abigail couldn't sleep peacefully. In her sleep, the little girl was delirious, calling Victoria over and over again in a heartbreaking voice. Victoria sat on the side of the bed, hugging her daughter's small body tightly, whispering soft words to make Abigail feel safe. However, how could she truly ensure that sense of security, if she herself was unsure of their future?
  • “Mom...” Abigail's voice sounded softly, breaking the silence after Victoria finished reading her a bedtime story.
