Chapter 30

• Dani awoke to a dull pain in her neck. She found herself on the couch in her father’s hospital room, now dim at half-past eleven in the evening.
• The sound of the heart rate monitor beside her was steady and reassuring, but the sight of her father still unconscious with a breathing tube down his throat made her chest hurt.
• Her mother was nowhere to be found. Outside, several nurses walked by. Dani rose from the couch, massaging her sore neck. Out in the hallway, a man she recognized as the doctor assigned to her father was speaking with a tall, dark-haired man.
