• Later that afternoon, Dani walked home as usual. Thankfully, no conspicuous black car waited outside her school and Alexei no longer badgered her with texts.
• Once her apartment building came into view, Dani crossed the street. Oddly, the doorman Jenkins was not at his post.
• Forehead creasing, Dani pushed the wide glass doors open and spotted Jenkins by the concierge desk. He was speaking with a dark-haired man in a suit.
