• He thought he’d been too late.
• He didn’t know how long Dani had been unconscious when he found her, and it took him and Maksim at least another half-hour before they finally found shelter in the middle of the woods.
• Everything had been just enough. A single matchstick to start a fire, and enough blankets to keep Dani alive. A minute longer and she could’ve succumbed to frostbite or full-blown hypothermia—things he weren’t capable of handling alone.
