Chapter 6

  • “Just drive, I will let you know when to drop me off, don’t worry, I have enough money to pay you,”
  • She assured the driver who nodded and kept driving. Her phone buzzed. She glared at it and saw that it was her period tracker notification.
  • “Does it get worse than this?”
  • She murmured. Her period was late. In all the wedding preparation rush and trying to bring new clients to the company before she gets married, she forgot to check.
  • “No, they can’t do this to me,”
  • Karina whispered. She couldn’t be pregnant. Two hours ago, maybe even an hour ago, it would have been good news but now? No, she didn’t want to have a baby with a man who openly cheated on her with her sister three days before their wedding.
  • “Please, drop me off at the medical center,”
  • Karina told the driver. She needed to be sure. She hoped it wasn’t because she wouldn’t have the baby. She couldn't do it. her life was already hell enough, she couldn’t marry into another hell. She couldn’t believe how fast things changed. Nick was everything. He had been everything.
  • “I can’t believe any of the shits that happened today,”
  • She whispered as she wiped her eyes for the hundredth time. The tears didn’t stop coming out. She lost two important deals, lost her fiancée, and might be pregnant for the same fiancée. Her life couldn’t get any worse than it already has.
  • On top of everything, she had no one to call. She had no friends. Not even one friend. She used to have one friend but their bond hadn’t been strong because they stopped being friends as soon as Halle moved away from the country and she hasn’t heard from her in about five years now.
  • “We are here,”
  • The driver announced. Karina wiped her eyes one last time. She paid the driver and begged him to wait for her. She rushed into the hospital.
  • “Please, where can I do a proper pregnancy test?”
  • She asked and she was directed to the laboratory area. She sat and waited for it to be her turn. They took her blood sample and Urine for the test because she requested both. She had to wait another twenty minutes for the result. She was told to go for a scan after the test which pretty much confirmed that she was pregnant. The scan showed she was about a month pregnant.
  • Karina didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. If it was a month ago, that means she got pregnant on Nick’s thirty-one birthday. She couldn’t help the sick feeling that settled in her when she remembered what had happened that day and how she waited until his birthday was almost over for him to show up.
  • He had shown up drunk and out of his mind. Back then, she didn’t think it was bad but now, it all felt different. Maybe he got drunk back then because he didn’t want to have to deal with her yet she had gotten ready, and bought new sexy lingerie just to please him.
  • “Congratulations Mrs. Carson. You are three weeks and five days pregnant,”
  • The doctor revealed. Karina had to pretend to smile. She couldn’t let others know what was really happening to her.
  • “Thank you, doc,”
  • She said and got up to leave. The doctor tried to call her back but Karina could barely make out anything she was saying. She hurried out of the hospital. She looked around for the cab man she told to wait for her but she couldn’t find him.
  • “Yeah, even he doesn’t want to deal with me,”
  • She let out. She didn’t try to find another cab, instead she trekked. She walked and walked until she found a park and sat down. She looked around seeing families run around. Kids and parents playing. Moms pushing their toddlers in a carrier. Everything was foreign to her as it was something that she never experienced. She didn’t know what it was like to have a mother as she never met her mom.
  • She died before she could know what a mother was. Even the dad she knew stopped caring about the moment his new wife and kid arrived. She became an outcast. The only person who would have cared for her wasn’t mentally stable. Grandma had dementia and sometimes had a hard time remembering her. Plus, she lived across the country in an old people's home.
  • Growing up, Karina never felt loved or needed. It was always her against everyone else that’s why she had tried her best to work hard and get her father’s attention. She had gone to school to study what he wanted in hopes that he would someday look at her but he never seemed to notice her. never gave a fuck about her but when Ava does it, suddenly, it becomes a remarkable achievement. Karina graduated with a first class but that wasn’t celebrated. Ava got a second class upper and they threw a party for her. Dad got her a new car.
  • Nick had been the only thing she got that made her Dad even recognize her. The only time he hugged her since she became an adult, was the day she told them that Nick had asked her to marry him. now she didn’t have Nick either because Ava wanted him and got him. Nick lied to her. and made her feel special. Pretended like he only had eyes for her only for him to be screwing her sister behind her back. No, not behind her back. they were doing it under her nose. She saw them and they didn’t even hide it.
  • “Aaarrrghhh!!!”
  • Karina cried, clutching her heart that was in so much pain. Everything, all she ever wanted, Ava took everything. Finding out she was carrying Nick’s child the same day she found out he was cheating on her with her sister was the worst thing that could ever have happened to her.
  • The whole of today turned out to be hell for him. Some of the people passing saw her and stopped to look at her and went on their way. She sniffed back tears and sat in the park until it was late before she got up and walked the rest of the way home.
