• Karina saw her life flash before her eyes as she lay in the wreck of her car, struggling to hold on to life, to breathe, and to survive. It was hard thinking about what she had done with her life. Nothing. She lived twenty-seven years for others. Trying to get her dad’s validation. Studying the course that would please him. getting a job in the company and working her ass off just so he could look her way but not once did he notice all of her handwork.
• She thought about how when she met Nick, she practically started living for him too. letting him push the things he wanted on her. except for a few occasions like when he asked her to quit or when he asked her to move in with him. Every other thing he asked of her, she did it. She tried to change herself just to fit the kind of woman that he would want.
• Ava, even though she told herself that she wasn’t in a competition with her sister, she always tried to go beyond what Ava could do. She was the smart one not because she was an academic genius but because she studied hard to pass all her courses. Because she wanted her dad to notice but after everything, it was still Ava who got all the praise. Not once since she lost her mother did her dad praise her.
