  • When Gertrude heard that question, she couldn’t help but chuckle. It was a question she had been asked countless times before, and quite frankly, she was tired of it. It had become predictable, almost boring. First, Pedro’s mother had asked, then his father, followed by Uncle Noel, Morgan, Aida, and now Lily. Every single one of them had demanded to know the same thing—why was she doing this? What was her motive? Why was she toying with their lives as if they were mere pieces on a chessboard? What did she hope to gain from all of this?
  • Letting out a small yawn, she leaned back. She already knew that when Pedro arrived tomorrow, he would ask the exact same question. It was inevitable. Watching Lily’s anxious and bewildered expression, Gertrude sighed before speaking in a teasing tone.
