• I swallowed as Alessia’s unmistakable footsteps halted in the hallway right in front of Lila’s room. I could almost hear her hands on the knob, and I was certain the door would be pushed open any moment from now.
• Lila was scared. I could see it from where I stood. She eyed the door like it was her worst enemy, as her eyes worked so fast, perhaps thinking about a way to get out of this. I wanted to tell her it wasn’t her fault we were in this situation. After all, I was the one who had come up here to talk to her.
