• It was hard to compartmentalize her tone because it was somewhere between vicious and gentle, like the very nice boy on dreads with the occasional need to smoke pot that your typical suburban mother would warn you about. I wanted to cringe but, at the same time, approach.
• It was a good thing that I had the shower running, so she had no evidence of my crying other than what her ears had heard. And she could have been wrong. It could just have been the dripping water from the shower head or the hitting of the water on the tiles. It could be anything at all.
