Chapter 197 Goodnight Elizabeth

  • Tears streaming down her face at the significance of the letter, she threw on her robe and rushed out towards the house. She needed to see Elizabeth; she needed someone who didn't know him to read the letter and tell her that he hadn't said he was going to commit suicide. She couldn't bear the anguish of knowing that it was probably provoked by her.
  • She crossed the living room in a hurry and climbed the stairs as fast as her bare feet would allow. The nurse had not arrived yet; it was very early, so she just went in and, trying to control the tremors in her body, crawled over to her grandmother. She was deeply asleep, radiating a sense of peace that momentarily managed to calm Victoria's sobs. She took her hand, needing to wake her up. Still, a sudden scream escaped from her swollen lips as she felt her cold, frozen wrist... it couldn't be happening, not now, Victoria thought, on the verge of a hysterical attack.
  • "Liz... don't leave now, Liz... I need to see your eyes... please..." she cried out desperately but received no response. She tried with her face, caressing her cheek, but she was the same, colorless, with prominent bones, and as cold as ice. In a fit of helplessness, Victoria struck the mattress, causing the lifeless head of her grandmother to fall to one side.
