Chapter 6
- Ruby sat tiredly in her office, this was the first time she was sitting in over seven hours, one of her expectant mothers had gone into labor earlier than anticipated and she didn't have an easy birth which hadn't been easy for Ruby not with the shortage of supplies and staffs' it was one of the most difficult birth she has had in a while she took a deep breath calming her tired muscles' she knew she couldn't relax yet as the new mom had lost a lot of blood there wasn't any blood left in the blood bank so she hoped she doesn't go into a crisis.
- The hospital still hasn't changed their mind, in fact, they were no longer answering her cars, it was really up to her and her colleagues to help the women here, she didn't have much but she would do her best and the others swore to do the same, she believed in teamwork and know they will achieve much if they continue like this, everyone has been helpful even the women in the island were helping, so far they were doing okay but she knew things won't remain like this especially not with the basic things they needed fast running out, soon she would have to give in and leave, which she didn't want, there were still so much she had to do, not to mention, she didn't want to return to the city where there was nothing waiting for her but disappointment.
- Shaking off the thoughts, she rested her head on her desk and tried to get some sleep, that did last long because her office door flew up with a large bang.
- "Ruby, we have an emergency,"
- Sara announced as she rushed into Ruby's office, she jumped up fearing it was the new mom, there went her chance of getting any sleep.
- "What happened?"
- She asked picking up her stereoscope and already heading out towards where the new mom was.
- "No, it's not the new mom, it's the baby from earlier, she is very sick, her temperature is so high,"
- "Let's go,"
- Ruby said getting out of the office, she went to the emergency room and found the poor angel there with her dad who looked super worried, the baby was still crying and the dad was trying to make her stop crying, she pushed him aside and examined her, then she ordered the nurses to get her some shots which she administrated to her, it took a while for her temperature to go down just a little bit but it was better than when she met her earlier, and the baby fell asleep showing that the shots were starting to work, she made sure the little one was sleeping in the right angle and properly covered before she walked out of the room, telling the nurse to watch out for her, she met the baby daddy in the hallway, he walked fast towards her.
- "Doctor, how is she,?"
- "She is fine, it was just as a result of exposure to too much sir, did you undress her for long?"
- "Yes, when I have her a bath, I didn't even notice she had a fever, I should have known, I almost killed her,"
- He looked scared, he didn't actually try to kill her as he thought, it was because he was observant that he was able to detect that she wasn't fine, so technically he was doing good, she wanted to tell him that too easy his guilt but when he looked up at her again, the look disappeared.
- "She is fine, right? Nothing out of the ordinary?"
- "Yes, she is, she is sleeping right now and would sleep for at least two to three hours, you can choose to take her home now or wait till she wakes up,"
- "Thank you doc,"
- "It's my job, no need for thanks,"
- She said as she started to walk away, but he stopped her with his hand.
- "What?"
- She asked removing his hand from her.
- "I am sorry, but can I ask of a favor from you?"
- "What's that?"
- "See the thing is, I have somewhere I have to be and I don't want to wake her up, so I was hoping you can help me look after her for a while,"
- "No, I can't do that,"
- She declined, she knew what he was trying to do, she wondered just why he still wanted to abandon his child, he was doing a good job with her.
- "Please,"
- "Sorry, I can't do that, we are all busy here and why are you still trying to abandon her, you are doing a god job with her, just keep her with you, your child is safer with you than with someone else."
- She advised, he didn't like what she said because his expression changed again.
- "I told you she isn't mine, why can't y'all just believe me? I promise I would be back,"
- "Sorry, there is no room for that here, if you leave you to have to take her with you, she stays if you stay,"
- Ruby responded, she really needed to catch up on sleep before anything else comes up and he was disrupting that.
- "This is a hospital right? Shouldn't you have some obligations and perhaps some kind of hospitality? I told you there is somewhere I have to be why can't you help me?"
- He yelled.
- Ruby stared at him, she almost wanted to laugh at his audacity, did he really take her for a fool? She should watch his kid, and he had somewhere to be, that line sounded so familiar and unwanted, if he thinks she would fall for it then he better rethink.
- "You can't yell at me,"
- "I am sorry ma, I didn't mean to yell, I just need to leave real quick, I will be back before you know it.
- "Come on doc, you are the only one that will listen to me and the only one here I can trust with her, I promise I will be back before you know it,"
- He pleaded, he looked genuine but she had seen enough of this to fall for this.
