• Looking down at her mother's resting figure, Lalaine clutched the paper cup to her chest, hoping it might alleviate the chill in her heart. Realistically, the only thing that would bring her solace would be her mother's full recovery. The comforting embrace of Nick's arms around her, with his reassuring voice promising everything would be alright, would have provided some comfort.
• She missed him dearly and wished he was by her side, but fate had different plans for them. It seemed ironic how events had unfolded. Nick had released her from their contract just in time for Lalaine to witness her mother's decline and to care for her father as he faced a bleak existence without his wife by his side. Lalaine pondered if her past actions with Nick had triggered karma to deliver a harsh blow.
• "Mr. Brown?" a familiar voice called from the doorway. Lalaine looked up to see a tall brown-haired doctor retrieve a pen from his white lab coat and begin writing on the clipboard. "Hello, I'm Dr. Daniel Crawford, and I'll be overseeing the surgery and assuming the role of your wife's attending physician. If that's acceptable to you?"
