Chapter 10 There's a Snake in the Bed

  • Janice had it all planned out. The estate was situated on the mountainside. If a snake were to slither into Summer's room in the middle of the night and fatally bite her, Summer's death would be purely accidental. No one could trace it back to her!
  • "A venomous... snake? Do you want the snake to kill her?"
  • Betty's paws trembled. While she had done plenty of bad deeds for Janice and her mother, murder was not something she had ever done.
  • "What? You're unwilling?"
  • "It's not that I'm unwilling... I am loyal to you and Madam," Betty explained. Madam did say not to startle them..."
  • "Enough! I don't want to hear that. My mother is weak. She is unaware of how much could change as time dragged on. Striking first is the correct approach! If you're unwilling to help me, others will gladly do it. However, Nanny, I remember your youngest son has a gambling addiction. To repay his debts, you had taken quite a few things from my home, hadn't you?"
  • Betty looked at Janice in disbelief.
  • Janice was so young, yet she had already learned to grasp others' weaknesses and use them to blackmail them!
  • The things she had taken from the estate were all very valuable. Judging by their value, she could be sentenced to a long time in jail...
  • Janice continued, saying, "Of course, Nanny, you've watched me grow up. I won't be ruthless. As long as you help me, these matters will forever remain a secret. Moreover, whenever you need money in the future, you can just ask me. Nanny, it's your choice. Will you do it or not?"
  • Betty slowly closed her eyes.
  • Did she have a choice?
  • Late into the night, Dylan had given Summer a suite with a balcony. It was a sign of high favor, indicating his high regard for her.
  • Of course, Summer understood well that Dylan valued not her as a person but for what she could bring him.
  • Although she was deep asleep, Summer was still vigilant. Any disturbance in the room would immediately awaken her.
  • Halfway through her sleep, she suddenly heard faint sounds coming from the window sill.
  • There were footsteps on the balcony. After a few seconds of silence, the footsteps gradually faded away and soon disappeared.
  • After lying still for a moment to confirm that no one was coming back, Summer turned on the phone Dylan had given her, using its faint light to illuminate the balcony.
  • She confirmed that there was no one on the balcony.
  • They had just stood there for a while before leaving. What were they doing? Monitoring her sleep?
  • It could not be that simple!
  • Summer decisively got out of bed. As she used the phone as a light source, she carefully searched every corner of the room, looking for any signs of intrusion.
  • Hiss…
  • Suddenly, she heard a strange sound, like someone rapidly inhaling.
  • Summer accurately pinpointed the direction of the sound. It came from beside her bed and about a meter away from her feet!
  • What was it?
  • She quickly turned the phone's light to its brightest setting, shining it toward the sound.
  • There was a cobra on the bed with its hood raised as it hissed.
  • It seemed to have been targeting her for a while as half its body was raised. Its green eyes were fixed on her like a ghost.
  • If she had not heard the noise and woken up, she might already have been lying paralyzed in bed.
  • At that moment, the cobra launched its attack, its tail swinging toward her neck!
  • Trained to react swiftly, Summer rolled out of the way, dodging the cobra's strike.
  • She quickly got up and grabbed the cobra by its tail before swiftly swinging it toward the ground with her right hand.
  • The snake was instantly knocked unconscious.
  • Summer picked up the scissors she had hidden under her pillow as a precaution against accidents, intending to cut off the cobra's head.
  • However, just as the scissors were about to touch the cobra, Summer suddenly realized something. This type of cobra was native to the south. There was no way it would be found in the area.
  • This snake did not crawl into her room on its own. Someone had deliberately put it there!
  • Those people wanted her dead!
  • Summer's mind raced.
  • Dylan valued her highly right now as he saw her as useful for being friendly with the Nights. He would not do this.
  • The only possibility was Celeste and Janice.
  • At that thought, Summer slowly narrowed her eyes. As her eyes reflected in the moonlight, they emitted a faint, icy chill like that of a secluded moon.
  • They wanted to kill her.
  • Well, Janice needed to think carefully about her own capabilities first.
  • Summer quietly slipped out of the room.
  • As the night grew deeper, the moon traveled westward.
  • Almost everyone in the estate was deep asleep. At 1 a.m., everyone slept most deeply.
  • Suddenly…
  • "Aah!"
  • A scream pierced through the sky, crazed and frantic.
  • Birds nested in the estate's trees were startled, causing them to flutter away in large flocks.
  • "What happened?"
  • "What's going on?"
  • "I don't know. I just heard a scream. Someone was shouting for help."
  • "Quick! That scream sounded like it was from Ms. Janice's room!"
  • The servants were awakened and, upon locating the source of the sound, rushed to Janice's room.
  • The door to Janice's room was not locked, so the servants opened it and rushed in.
  • Janice lay there, convulsing on the bed as foam streamed out of her mouth. Her face was already turning purple and blue. She looked like she was about to breathe her last breath.
  • The servants were stunned.
  • "W-What's going on?"
  • The servants soon snapped out of their stupor and were about to rush forward to help.
  • "Wait! Don't go over there yet!" One servant fearfully exclaimed. "There's a snake in the bed!"
