Chapter 20 Overly Confident Joel

  • The fat man reacted, left his wife behind, and ran away. Just as he turned around, Joel grabbed his arm and kicked him out. The security guard next to him went up and held him and brought him to Gemma. Joel stepped on his calf and forced him to kneel.
  • Gemma's eyes were sharp and icy. "Tell me, who instructed you?"
  • The fat man still wanted to argue, but Joel lifted his hand to tidy up his sleeve cuff, feeling a bit impatient. The security guard also lifted the pregnant woman beside him, while the woman continued screaming and crying.
  • The frightened look on the fat man's face finally turned gray when he saw Karen trying to sneak away. "It's her! This woman gave me money. She asked us to act and find someone named Gemma to ruin her reputation!"
  • The crowd was in an uproar again, and the faces of the few people who had just agreed with Karen changed. Karen's face turned pale. She didn't expect Joel to suddenly appear.
  • "You're slandering me. What evidence do you have?"
  • "The money you gave me hasn't been spent yet. If you don't believe me, you can ask my wife. She knows about it too! I don't even know who Gemma is. If it wasn't for you to find me..."
  • The police siren sounded outside. Gemma said coldly, "If there's a problem, go to the police station. Director Karen, please."
  • "Don't arrest me. I don't want the money anymore. I won't dare to do it anymore! I'll give you back the money. Just let me go!" The pregnant woman was making a fuss and refused to get in the car.
  • The truth was clear. Gemma was framed. Joel spoke up, "Officer, there may be others involved in this."
  • He squinted his eyes and slowly scanned the crowd. The people who had just pointed at and talked to Gemma lowered their heads instantly.
  • Gemma looked at the few people who wanted to sneak away. "There may be accomplices."
  • The police stopped the onlookers and questioned them one by one. Those who came to watch the excitement regretted it and were anxious to prove their innocence.
  • "We stayed to watch because we were afraid of Vice President Gemma getting into trouble."
  • "We trust Vice President Gemma's character. I didn't believe this from the beginning, let alone participate in it!"
  • Gemma looked at those who were afraid of losing their jobs with contempt and coldness in her eyes. The police took Karen away to investigate the situation. Gemma turned her head and thanked Joel, who had no expression on his face.
  • "Is this how Miss Lewis gives thanks to people? Can't even have a cup of tea?"
  • "Mr. Summers came to find me specifically, not for tea, right? Just say what you have to say."
  • Gemma didn't buy it. She could solve the problem even if he didn't come. His appearance made it seem like the management of her brother's company was inadequate, and the security couldn't even handle troublemakers. It was a joke.
  • Joel pursed his lips. "There is indeed something. Another item at the auction; name your price."
  • Gemma was taken aback for a moment and laughed. "Mr. Summers, didn't you already make a choice? I don't need money. Do you have anything else to exchange for the other item?"
  • "As long as I can do it, you can say it. That item is related to my grandmother's last wish. Don't you want her to leave without regrets?"
  • "Talking about money won't work, so you want to talk about feelings? Mr. Summers, you haven't learned anything else, but you're good at moral kidnapping."
  • Gemma shook off his hand, patted her sleeves, and left without looking back. It was unlucky early in the morning. First Karen, then Joel; they were all here to make trouble for her.
  • "You deliberately got the auction item and deliberately changed your mind at the last minute, just to attract my attention and make me come to you?"
  • After a moment of silence, Joel hesitated. He wanted to say that playing hard to get wouldn't work on him and that they could talk about money, but anything else was off the table. However, he was worried that being too blunt would cause Gemma to turn against him, especially since he needed her help.
  • Gemma chuckled. "Mr. Summers, how did you manage to become so confident with such an ordinary background? Is it a tradition in your family? If you have the ability, come and take it whenever you want. I'll be waiting!"
