Chapter 2 Starting Fresh

  • The next morning, Joel planned to take Gemma to the hospital to deal with his grandmother's affairs, but the servant told him that his wife had already packed and left. A young man with a luxury car came to pick her up, looking very attentive.
  • Joel sneered. It seemed that Gemma didn't like him as much as the rumors said. She had already made plans and even found a spare tire.
  • "Joel, that woman say you're divorced? Is it true?" Faith Peters greeted her son when he came downstairs. "I asked her to make breakfast, but she dared to say no. Does she still see me as her mother-in-law? She even talked back!"
  • Joel was surprised by his mother's harshness towards Gemma. He always thought that his family treated her well out of respect for his grandmother.
  • "It's true," he replied.
  • "Why didn't you tell me earlier? She left with her suitcase this morning. She might have stolen something. I need to check her room thoroughly."
  • Joel didn't expect his mother to say such a thing or even suspect Gemma of theft. He had only been to their marital room a few times, and he followed his mother as she walked forward in anger.
  • Gemma's spare card was placed on the TV cabinet. She had just taken her ID and replacement clothes with her and left everything else behind.
  • Joel was so annoyed by his mother's nagging that he left without eating breakfast.
  • Gemma went to the hospital after settling in. She was wondering how to tell her grandmother about the divorce when she ran into her mother-in-law and sister-in-law at the entrance.
  • "Did you really divorce my brother, Gemma?" Jane Summers laughed at her with a strange tone, asking, "What's going on? Did you change your strategy?"
  • "I don't want anything from your family." Gemma raised her beautiful eyebrows, and her sudden arrogance stunned them.
  • "What's with your attitude!" Faith couldn't believe that she would leave empty-handed and couldn't stand the change in her daughter-in-law's behavior. Gemma was no longer the gentle and obedient wife she used to be.
  • "This is a hospital. Please be quiet," the doctor said, interrupting their conversation. "The patient needs to rest."
  • Gemma followed the doctor inside, and Jane informed Patricia of the divorce news. She then called Joel and falsely accused Gemma of causing trouble at the hospital for money.
  • In the end, Jane proudly declared that she had defended the Summers family's dignity and taught Gemma a good lesson. The silence on the other end of the phone scared her, and she thought Joel had hung up.
  • "Is this how you treat Gemma normally?" Joel's face darkened, and the atmosphere in the office became heavy. His assistant, Brad Hill, had already noticed that his boss was in a bad mood and dared not even breathe.
  • Joel's grandmother was still very weak, so Gemma didn’t stay long. When Faith and the others left, they passed by the doctor's office and saw her chatting with the doctor. Dr. Mason, who had been serious just now, was now laughing and chatting with her.
  • "This woman is a disaster!" Jane rolled her eyes. "Patricia has already come back. I wonder how long she can be so arrogant."
  • After asking about Joel's grandmother's condition, Gemma wanted to leave. Ian and Mason stopped her and asked, "Did you agree to the divorce?"
  • "Why not? Thank you, Ian, for helping me move this morning."
  • "Your elder brother is heartbroken. His most beloved sister is groveling in front of Joel Summers. If it weren't for the fear of hurting you, he would have killed him to vent your anger."
  • "Don't worry, I won't be fooled again." Gemma laughed at herself. For the sake of so-called love, she gave up her identity as the young miss of the Lewis family and acted alone against all advice.
  • Not only was she estranged from her family, but she was also looked down upon, and in the end, she was heartbroken and her dignity was shattered.
  • At night, Gemma thought about leaving and decided to stay with Joel's grandmother for the last night. She slept soundly next to the hospital bed and vaguely heard someone yelling for help. She subconsciously stood up and pushed the door open.
  • When she looked down the corridor, she saw thick smoke and chaos. The hospital suddenly caught fire, and the flames grew bigger and bigger.
  • Gemma was frightened. She closed the door and called Joel, but no one answered despite several rings. She was anxious and tried calling Brad, but someone answered the phone.
  • "Hello."
  • Gemma was stunned. She was all too familiar with the woman's voice and felt a bitter taste in her mouth, trembling all over.
  • "Get Joel on the phone!"
  • "Oh, it's probably not a good time now. He just went to take a shower... Joel is very tired. Is there anything I can pass on for him?" Patricia's tone changed to a smug one.
  • "The hospital is on fire, and Grandma is in the hospital. Tell Joel to answer the phone quickly!"
  • "Gemma, what kind of trick are you playing again? You and Joel are getting divorced. Do you want to use his grandmother as a savior?" Patricia hung up the phone, secretly pleased, and deleted the call record. When Joel's phone rang, she saw that it was from "Mrs. Summers".
  • This made her very unhappy. The position of Summers' wife could only belong to her. What qualifications did Gemma have to be called Mrs. Summers?
  • The fire grew bigger and bigger. Gemma tried calling Brad, but no one answered. She couldn't wait any longer and had to carry Joel's grandmother out by herself.
  • "Grandma, wait for me here!"
  • When she got outside, she remembered that she had left her bracelet in the ward. She took it off while sleeping because it was uncomfortable. It was the only thing that Joel had given her, and without thinking, she rushed back in.
  • "Gemma, come back!" The old lady was so anxious; Gemma was risking her life in such a big fire!
  • "I found it." Gemma relied on her memory and felt her way back. She hadn't even had time to be happy when the bracelet snapped in half with a pop.
  • Her only thought was gone, and as she stood there, even the bracelet knew that she and Joel were going to separate.
  • Thinking back on everything, she didn't owe Joel anything. The only people she owed were her parents and family.
  • It was better to completely break it off.
  • With this in mind, Gemma decisively threw away the bracelet and ran outside. The fire was getting bigger and bigger, and the corridor was no longer visible, but she could still hear crying and screaming for help.
  • "Gemma? Gemma?"
  • "I'm here..."
  • The smoke was too thick, and in the panic, someone seemed to be calling her and pulling her. She felt her feet leave the ground as if she was falling from somewhere, then everything went black, and she knew nothing.
  • "Gemma! Someone! Save my child!" The old lady who was stopped by firefighters cried out in despair and kept blaming Joel for being late.
  • The entire hospital was heavily surrounded by the big fire, and no one came out until the fire was extinguished. The scene was a mess.
  • Joel looked at the raging fire without saying a word. Brad trembled with fear and said, "Mr. Summers, I did not receive your wife's call in time. It was my fault, I'm sorry."
  • He remained silent, and no one knew what he was thinking. Time seemed to stand still.
