Chapter 38

• The guard felt sick as he watched Bridget's body being lowered into the ground. He could not bear to look, but he could not look away. He wanted to run, to flee from the horror of what was happening.
• But he was frozen in place, unable to move. He could only watch, powerless to do anything to help her. As the earth was heaped over her, he felt a sharp pain in his side. He looked down to see a knife embedded in his flesh, blood pouring from the wound.
• He looked up, only to see the other guards staring at him, their faces cold and impassive. After they buried her, they buried the nice guard with her and covered them up with the thick sand and mud.
