A man around Alpha Dane's age emerges from a room, toppling a pile of books and sending them tumbling to the ground. On his head, his black hair is secured in a bun. His eyes are brilliant green, and he looks at me.

"This way." He takes me across the fallen pile of books and sets me at a little table. "Dane tells me that you can't read or write." I look at Alpha Dane and shake my head at him.
