Chapter 13

  • Taevon’s POV
  • “What the actual hell is wrong with you?” I asked, almost losing my cool. “This isn’t a game. Love isn’t something you can just bring up and play around with.
  • “You need an actual reason to fall in love with someone and then marry them. What you’re trying to do is not genuine at all.”
  • “But I guess what your brother and my sister did to me is genuine, huh,” she snapped. “They hurt me…”
  • “And I’ve already told you to move on. You were hurt, I get it, but you trying to get back at them with this expensive joke is going too far.”
  • “You gave me this advice, this was the best idea I could come up with. If you do have one I can work with, then let me know and I’ll see if I can take it.”
  • “I…” I started to say as I stopped halfway. I didn’t know Charlotte would be this crazy to go ahead with this idea. I had advised her only for her to bring up a crazy idea which I did not see was convincing enough to make my brother jealous.
  • “Oh come on,” she rolled her eyes. “I know what goes around in the hospital. I know how they disrespect single doctors and they respect married ones.
  • “You can’t tell me that there hasn’t been a patient who has arrived and did not want to be treated by a married doctor. I might have been in a coma for three years but I doubt the practice has changed much.
  • “Besides, there are benefits to getting married that I doubt you would get now that you’re single.”
  • What she had said brought a light bulb to my head. I could use her words to my advantage.
  • I had to get the funds for my sister’s health and the only way for me to do that would be to get more money from the will my father had locked away. The will needed me to be married before I would access it. This was an ingenious idea.
  • I looked at her. I couldn’t tell her of my plans just yet, but if we were on the same page maybe I would let her in on it a little.
  • It would be a win-win for us both. She would succeed in making my brother jealous while I would succeed in getting the funds I would need from the will and use it to get a cure for my sister.
  • “Well,” she said, getting me away from my trance. “What do you say? Have I given you ideas on why this is a very wonderful plan?”
  • Yes you have,” I thought to myself but I knew we had to be smart about this if we were to make it believable.
  • For once I threw away my doctor's code to accept her conditions.
  • I remembered that I had not told her of my relationship with my girlfriend but I had nothing serious with her. She was only a fuck buddy and nothing more.
  • She wasn’t even asking for a relationship which was normal seeing as I would not be there for her and she knew it.
  • Besides, she had a terrible personality that I could not stand but she was good in bed so it was still a win.
  • “So what do you say?” she asked. “I can hear my parents voices outside the door, hurry up so I can know what to do.”
  • “I can’t give you an answer yet,” I responded. As much as I would love to agree to her terms, I had to think it over.
  • “There is nothing to think over!” she snapped. “Is it a yes or a no?”
  • I heard the voices getting louder as I was under pressure to answer her.
  • “Fine, yes, I’m in,” I gave off my reply in a hurry.
  • “Great!” She clapped her hands in excitement, happy that her plans were about to come to fruition.
  • “But this isn’t over yet,” I pointed to her. “We still need to meet within the week to discuss the conditions of our marriage.”
  • “I don’t have a phone yet.”
  • “That won’t be a problem,” I said, dipping my hand into my pocket to get out my business card which I handed over to her. “My number is there. Call me when you get home.”
  • She took up the card immediately and the door opened to see her parents smiling and getting into the room with a box which I guessed contained clothes she would change into.
  • Her mother pointed to the box, “I didn’t know which one would be good for you so I got your entire wardrobe.”
  • “Mum, it’s been three years, I’m sure none of them fit by now.”
  • “Trust me honey, I’ll know when I see you in them.”
  • I knew this was my cue to leave and I took it.
  • “I’m glad to have helped her heal,” I said with a smile on my face. “But this is where we part ways. I’ve got other patients to work on.”
  • Her parents hugged me as I waved at her before leaving the room, closing the door behind me.
  • I was excited that a solution was presenting itself before me but I was also sad that it was going through this medium.
  • I wished there was another way we could handle things but for her to have closure and for me to have the money I needed for my sister’s research, I would need to go ahead with the wedding.
  • This would save us so much trouble and pain.
  • “You’re smiling,” a nurse said, noticing my smile as I got into my office to take in deep breaths. With a cry of victory after shutting my door close, I tapped myself on the back, happy that all my plans were coming together.
  • “I still can’t believe I’m getting married,” I muttered to myself before settling into my chair. It was going to be a wonderful year.
