• Beta Ben was clear, and there was no mistaking his tone. He looked straight at me, then at Dylan, his face hard and unchanging. “I can’t approve this,” he said, firm but not harsh. “There are just too many risks,” he continued, shaking his head slowly, as if each word was weighing on him. “I’ve got to protect both of you. Alpha rights, this whole fight… it could turn ugly, and I don’t want to see either of you hurt.”
• Hearing him say that made my stomach twist. I felt like I’d been holding my breath, waiting for him to give us the green light, and now all that hope just deflated. I could feel disappointment creeping in, but I forced myself to stay quiet. I knew arguing wasn’t going to change anything. Beta Ben had made his decision, and we just had to accept it.
