• The moment I opened the door and saw Beta Ben, I couldn’t hide my shock. This old, frail man standing before me... he was the Beta of this pack? I almost couldn’t believe it. He looked so old, so tired, moving slowly as he hunched forward with a bent back. I’d never seen a Beta look like this. Betas were supposed to be strong, powerful, ready to stand by the Alpha, not hidden away in a place like this. The room itself was as rundown as he looked, stuck away in this hidden, deserted corner of the pack’s territory.
• How could Alpha Lionel let this happen to him? How could he turn his back on his own Beta, someone who must have served the pack so loyally for years? It didn’t make any sense. I tried to imagine what Beta Ben might have looked like in his younger days, when he was strong and ready to defend the pack. It hurt to see him like this, and I felt an anger rise in me toward Alpha Lionel. This wasn’t just neglect... it felt like cruelty.
