• At this Sherry thought of what she had seen last night at the ward door. She was still unsure about telling Stella that the miserable man had kissed her in private while she was asleep, so she paused for a long time. "I saw Clarence yesterday, what did he say to you?" she obliquely questioned.
• When Stella brought this up, she was unable to speak. "Nothing, he approached me to allow me to reimburse the funds. He also added, for no apparent reason, "Horace will never marry me because I'm a divorced woman."
