• The world spun around me in a blur of harsh light and suffocating darkness. My breath came in ragged gasps as the car swerved down the winding road, tires screeching against the gravel. The weight of the night pressed down on me—on all of us—and I clutched Max tightly, his tiny body shaking in my arms. Summer, too, trembled beside me, her face pale against the seat.
