- Pain tore through my chest with every breath, each step like dragging fire through my lungs. The woods seemed endless, shadows stretching and twisting like phantoms. Blood seeped from the wound beneath my jacket, warm and sticky against my skin.
- I wasn’t sure what hurt more—the knife buried in my chest earlier or the words that seemed to be consuming my thoughts: “Your wife didn’t die because of the accident, Hollis. She was poisoned—long before that crash.”
