• The following morning, when I woke up, I noticed that Karl wasn't lying next to me in bed, so I got out of bed and went downstairs to look for him.
• I had just about reached the bottom of the stairs when I heard Karl's voice on the phone. I quickly crept in the direction the sound had come from.
• He never stopped looking for new methods to attract my attention, even when he wasn't physically present. I can only assume that he was monitoring my every move with a hidden camera.
