Chapter 6 Pierre

  • Chapter 6
  • Pierre
  • We had only been walking in the woods for three minutes when I heard Steve curse again.
  • “Fuck!” Steve cursed as he once again tripped over a tree root. “I swear someone is trying to kill us!”
  • I had stopped walking and gauged the location, as he was taking his next step he fell flat on his back. The uneasy feeling was building up. It felt like there were several sets of eyes on us and yet I could not see a thing out of the ordinary. “I think you might be right!” I swear I watched a root lower itself back into the ground. rubbing my eyes and focusing, everything seemed to be back to normal.
  • Taking a step towards Steve it was my turn to land on my backside. This time I was not mistaken, I saw the tree root recede into the ground. My heart was pounding in my chest. I have seen many crazy things but I have yet to witness this. I got back up and brushed off the dirt from my clothing. “This place isn’t right!”
  • Steve was turning around in circles where he stood. “This might be a stupid question but Pierre do you know where we are?”
  • I glanced at the trees hunting for the markers I placed on the trees. “We should have made it to the trucks by now … does it feel like we are walking in circles to you?”
  • Steve was starting to show signs of being tired, “it feels like we have been walking for almost thirty minutes!”
  • Steve had his hands placed on his waistline glancing back and forth trying to figure things out. just as I was doing the same.
  • I could feel my irritation starting to build. “I marked the pathway from the trucks to the campsite … something has removed them.” I rubbed both of my hands down my face trying to come up with a logical explanation for what was going on. "I have been doing this for many years. nothing like this has ever happened to me!" I was mainly speaking out loud to myself.
  • It was easy to tell that Steve was just as bothered as I was, “do you think we might have taken a wrong turn? I can not see Emma taking the ribbons off the trees. I mean, she isn't a saint but I have never known Emma to stoop to this leave of mischief. For the rest of us, well you already know, we were a head of you, so it can not be one of us." Steve was thinking to himself for a bit. "What about an animal? I do not know of any animal that could do this but you never know!"
  • Again I rubbed my face with frustration, “I have been tracking animals since I was a young boy. Military, the same thing! That is why I am the best. We did not take a wrong turn, something removed the markers." I noticed in the distance a piece of ribbon popping up from the ground. Strolling over to the ribbon, "There was this one time when Merna and I were on a case together. She was investigating a home for a couple." I bent over to pick ou the ribbon. "It turned out that the family had a prankster who enjoyed taking and moving objects around the house." Standing back up I studied the ribbon. The ribbon had been untied from the tree. "Long story short, that is when I became a believer in the paranormal. I brought my attention back to Steve, "I was not an animal that did this but there are things that do have the ability to do this!"
  • Steve had both of his hands up in the air, “I am not judging man, you don’t look like the type to make up stories. I am just going to say, I will have to see it before I believe it!”
  • I started to chuckle, “don’t blame you man, I was the same way!” Studying the surrounding area. "There is something that isn't adding up here!"
  • "There has to be a logical explanation to everything going on here!" Steve filled his lungs up with air, “what time do you think we got to the campsite?”
  • I thought about the timeline of events that happened. “We left the vehicles just before one in the afternoon!” I recalled the time when Markous was pitching a fit because Camile was running behind.
  • Steve looked up to the sky, “what time would you say it is now?”
  • "With the trees blocking out the location of the sun, it will be hard to tell what time it is now!" I started to do the math in my mind. “Fifteen minutes of walking, twenty minutes to get all the tents up, and we have been walking for close to thirty minutes … it is near three-fifteen,” I said with confidence.
  • Steve pulls out his cell phone from his pocket, “my phone is dead!”
  • I mimicked Steve's actions, “There is no way my phone should be completely dead. The phone was completely charged before we entered the woods.
  • Exhaling roughly, “None of this makes any sense.” Steve appeared like he was in deep thought. “I am not saying that I believe in all of this paranormal thing …" He was glaring down at the ground as he was speaking. "But I am starting to think that maybe … possibly …”
  • The first thing we heard was the sounds of children laughing. all around us, the low-ground plant life began to aggressively move around. all around us now the sound of children could be heard.
  • My sight shot towards Steve as he was frantically trying to pinpoint the individuals who were laughing at us. “We need to head back to the campsite, I need to speak with Merna.” I did not wait to see if Steve was following me.
  • Every hair on my body was standing on alert. using my special skills I was able to navigate back to the location where I knew Merna would be.
