Chapter 54

  • Xander Fuck but my life feels amazing. I should be scared at the prospect of having three kids at once but surprisingly I am not. I know how rare triplets are and I am so excited to meet them. Will they all look alike? Will they all be the same sex or will we get a mix of both? Financially, I can take care of these babies and physically and every other way, I want Hayley and I want these babies. I don’t know what I did to deserve this but I am grateful for my blessings. The car ride to Hayley’s work today was amazing. It made me realise how lucky I am that she came into my life. I listened to her talk about her family and I see why she’s so serious. Why she’s so responsible. I understand her fears and insecurities better than she thinks because I love her. I fucking love her... more than I imagined possible. My phone rings and I press answer on the cars hands free. It’s Carlos. “Hey boss. I paid that asshole a visit. Let’s just say his ugly face is even uglier now and he knows he has you to thank for that. Boss I gotta say... if he drugged my wife, he would be dead not beaten up.” “Thanks Carlos. I appreciate it. I'll get Amanda to see to it you get a bonus for having to touch that slime.” “No way boss... this one’s on the house. It caused me too much pleasure to get paid for.” I laugh, “You are something else my man.” Today is Gran’s oncologist appointment. I have about two hours to spare before I have to go back home to pick her up so I decide to stop by the office and check up on things. I have gotten used to going in early nowadays thanks to Hayley and I’ve found I like the quietness that comes with the early morning before the office fills up. I even take the stairs instead of the lift to get in some cardio, although after this morning in bed with Hayley, I don’t think I need it. I grin thinking about all the things we got up to and all the things I want to get up to with her. I am expecting to see Amanda because despite officially starting work later, she is always in the office extra early. Who I am not expecting to see is Kyle. He and Amanda appear to be having a heated conversation. Even from this distance I can see she is pissed off at him. I'm not sure what to do. I have to walk past them to get to my office and I know Kyle’s obviously not here to see me. While I am busy deciding whether to just walk in or leave, Kyle crowds Amanda until the back of her legs reach the edge of the desk and she has nowhere left to go. He lifts her chin and crashes his lips to hers. Fuck what am I seeing? That’s my cue to leave. I move away as stealthily as I can not that they would probably notice me even if I walked right past them right now. Damn. I’ve suspected something between these two for a while now but I never really gave it much thought. Why wouldn’t Kyle tell me about his? I don’t get it. He has been asking a lot of questions about relationships recently though. I am just going to pretend I didn’t see a thing and wait for him to tell me what’s going on. KKyle doesn’t do relationships normally. This had better be different because I am not losing the best personal assistant I’ve ever had just because he can’t keep it in his pants. I do know Amanda won’t settle for the crumbs Kyle normally throws so this ought to be interesting. By the time I go home, Gran is already ready even though she is about an hour early. That’s my Gran for you. I decide to take her out for breakfast. With everything going on, its been a while since we caught up. I’ve been taking for granted that Gran is ok and going to be okay. I think I lost sight of the reason she introduced me to Hayley in the first place. “So how are you feeling Gran? Honestly,” I ask after the waitress sets out orders down on the table. “I couldn’t be happier son.” “That I know. I mean health wise. You have been very quiet about your treatment and how you’re feeling.” “Health wise we both know I have a little more treatment left. It leaves me tired so I’m sorry I don’t talk to you as often. It’s not that I’m in pain or anything... just tired but that’s normal.” “I can’t wait for you to get a clean bill of health... Gran I wanted to say something... This whole Hayley situation... thank you....I never knew what I missing until I met her ... my life now... I have you to thank for that.” “No need to thank me son. I couldn’t be happier at how things turned out. Can you imagine having three little ones around the house? I can’t wait!” By the time we leave the coffee shop, we make it to the hospital with two minutes to spare. I drop Grandma at the entrance while I park the car. Gran is already with the doctor as I knock and walk into the doctor’s room. “Hi Xander, it’s nice to see you again.” I greet the doctor in reply and take a seat. “Like I was telling your Grandmother, her results from the last visit are a little worrying. We upped the chemotherapy dosage but her tumour maker levels have not decreased. In fact there’s a slight increase which could suggest a new tumour. It could also just be interference so I don’t want to worry you unnecessarily but rather just give you the facts. I think we do need to act fast though. I would like to repeat your tumour markers today and also do new scans and blood tests. Do you think you can spare the time today?” “Definitely. Do whatever you need to do doctor. If it is another tumour, where do we go from there?” I ask. “That’s our worse case scenario and hopefully it’s not that but if it were we would have to further increase her chemotherapy dosage which we have been avoiding because of the potential side effects but if need be we can adjust the chemo and meds until we get a balance that works.” I look over at Gran. She doesn’t look concerned. I on the other hand am stressing out. “Don’t worry Xander,” she tells me, “Let’s just do the doctor’s tests and go from there. There’s no need to worry.” I am not so sure though.
