Chapter 2 Job

  • Allison lay on her bed all day thinking of ways to raise money for her sister. She had been applying for different jobs, and had gone for some interviews. She would be having another interview in the next one hour, and she really hoped to get this particular job because the pay was high. Before now, she had not thought of applying for a job, because she was very okay with running her bar, but now she needed money anyhow she can find it.
  • She groaned in exhaustion then stretched her hand lazily to pick up her phone from the small table just beside her bed, to call Kenny.
  • "Hey Kenny." She began. She knew that she was about to get scolded. "I won't be around for the next two hours." she said in a tired voice.
  • "Another interview?" Kenny asked weakly from the other side of the phone.
  • "um...yup." She responded awkwardly.
  • "I think you are doing too much Ally. If you continue like this, you are going to end up in the hospital yourself."
  • Kenny was the manager in Allison's bar. Over the years, they had developed some sort of friendship.
  • "This will be the last one Kenny."
  • "That's what you said that last time." He sighed. "I know it's not easy for you but you need to give yourself a break. It's obvious you haven't had a good sleep in days."
  • Allison remained silent on the other side.
  • "Allison we're gonna get through this okay. I will support you in every way I can." he added, concern obvious in his voice.
  • "Thank you very much Kenny. That means a lot to me. I will see you later." She ended the call.
  • ________
  • Allison arrived at Bruce enterprise forty minutes later. The mighty building towered over her. She couldn't help but marvel at it. It was a sky scraper of about thirty to forty stories, she didn't know for sure. She was almost intimidated by the personality of the people there and she had not even gone inside. Everyone and everything seemed so organized. It is no news that only the best and most qualified candidates were employed there. For a moment, she felt like going back but the image of her sister lying unconscious in the hospital bed came to her mind.
  • She took a deep calming breath. 'I can do this'. She said in her head.
  • With determined steps, she walked inside. When she entered, she got confused. Everyone seemed busy and she couldn't find the candidates for the interview.
  • Luckily for her, a young girl about the same age as her approached her.
  • "Good day ma'am. I'm a receptionist here. Do you have an appointment?" she asked politely.
  • "I was called for an interview." Allison replied, trying her best not to be nervous.
  • "Follow me." she said and turned around. Allison quietly followed after her.
  • The receptionist brought her to a place where she saw some people sittting down in silence. She guessed that they came for the interview as well. The receptionist then gestured to her to join them. She was again intimidated by the number of people waiting to be interviewed. Her chances of getting this job was getting slimmer.
  • She was surprised that the interview had already started. Was she late? Or did they started earlier than they were supposed to? She didn't have the time to think about that. What if they already called her name?
  • She nervously went to sit with the other candidates. Another receptionist came to inform one of the candidates to come with her.
  • Allison quietly sat there praying silently that she was not too late.
  • Soon after, the receptionist came back.
  • "Miss Brown, come with me."
  • Allison heaved a sigh of relief. She stood up almost immediately, straightening the non-existent crease on her clothes. She began to follow the receptionist. The receptionist entered the elevator and Allison followed her. A moment later, she found herself standing in front of a door in a floor that seem like the last floor. She decided to ask.
  • "um... excuse me, is this the last floor?" she asked, her voice coming out a bit nervous.
  • "Yes. It is the CEO's floor". The receptionist answered with a straight and professional face.
  • She preferred the other receptionist. That one was friendlier.
  • Wait! Did she just say 'CEO'?
  • "CEO?" Allison asked confused. She didn't expect him to be the one to conduct the interviews.
  • "Yes. He decided to conduct the interviews today". She answered with the same straight and professional face.
  • Allison felt like fainting, she knew how difficult it would be to impress that stern man. Everybody knew how specific he was when it comes to hiring his employees. He hired only the best.
  • Suddenly she felt herself losing hope. Time was something that she didn't have on her side. Her sister was lying unconsciously in a hospital bed and she needed to get money as soon as possible. She was very aware that this job will not pay her one hundred and fifty thousand dollars but she had other plans. She would pool all the money from her bar, then add the money she had saved up for her sister's college tuition. She really didn't want to do it but it's better than letting her die.
  • And if the money still isn't enough, she would just have to beg the doctor to give her more time. She believe that if she begged enough, they might consider her.
  • Maybe when everything was well again, she would find a way for her sister to go to college.
  • She took a deep breath, mentally preparing herself and also reminding herself that everything was all for Kylie.
  • The receptionist didn't say any other word before knocking on the door.
  • "Come in." A deep masculine voice that made cold shiver run down her spine was heard from within.
  • The receptionist gently pushed the door open and entered inside with the nervous looking Allison trailing behind her.
