Chapter 4

  • ZANE'S POV
  • I watched her eyes grow wide in surprise and a hint of fear. My hand reached out to grab a leaf that had gotten caught in her hair probably from our romp on the floor. The brown color was a huge contrast to her silver hair.
  • "What are you doing?" she asked, her hand reaching out to slap mine away.
  • Not relenting, I grabbed the leaf and pulled it out of her hair, waving the brown patch in front of her eyes for effect before releasing it to fall weightlessly to the floor's earth, mixing up with the others that lay scattered everywhere.
  • "You know you don't have to always be cynical of me," I said.
  • "Especially after what we just did. I believe am no longer a stranger to you"I told her.
  • She scoffed, folding her arms across her breasts and elevating her bosom.
  • I felt my pants constrict tightly but swallowed down my discomfort.
  • "Do you think we'll become closer after what we just did? Do you think having mindless sex is a way to get to know someone?" she said, throwing her head back as she laughed.
  • I felt my hands fist at my sides and so fast, my hand snaked out to grab her arm a little more roughly than I had intended.
  • I shook her slightly.
  • "Mindless sex?"I said in disbelief.
  • She raised her defiant jaw at him, challenging me.
  • "Let me go!Yes!" she cried.
  • I released her arm so quickly that she stumbled back a little before regaining her balance. She sent a glare my way as she nursed her probably throbbing arm.
  • "I think it's best we forget this ever happened between us"she suggested, facing me now head-on.
  • I scoffed.
  • "What? Doesn't that mark on your neck mean anything to you?"I asked in disbelief.
  • It baffled me at her nonchalant attitude. Maybe where she came from, mating didn't mean all that much to her. But it meant more than a causal scratching of an itch to me. And I wasn't about to let her just slip away from me so easily. After all my inner wolf chose her for a reason.
  • No matter how poor his decision must have been, I must uphold his honor.
  • "Look, let's be realistic. We don't know each other. We've never met and apart from our wolves calling to each other, we have no desire to be with each other. I'm not even attracted to you. You're not my type." she finished in one breath.
  • I arched a brow up at her giving her an amused smirk. I was everybody's type. Judging by the way her chest heaved and how she panted for me when we made love, she couldn't deny it too.
  • "What?" she snapped.
  • "What are you saying exactly? That we should go our separate ways and hope that our paths never cross ever again?"I asked incredulously.
  • She nodded her affirmation.
  • "You can't be serious "I replied.
  • "Am dead serious," she said, as her hands fell to her sides helplessly.
  • "You cannot expect me to just walk away from my mate and that 'wound' won't be able to heal completely. You'll have to deal with the hassle of longing for me wherever I am" I explained.
  • Her lips pursed in thought but she raised defiant eyes at me and nodded.
  • "I'm willing to take that chance" she responded.
  • "You're not going to be able to leave here. I won't let you"I told her firmly.
  • "Is that a threat?" she questioned.
  • I shrugged.
  • "Take it in whatever way you would like," I told her, folding my arms across my chest and raising challenging eyes to her.
  • "You cannot keep me here. Wherever 'here' is. I won't let you" she told me.
  • I nodded.
  • "There must be a way that we could compromise so that it would be beneficial to the both of us" she negotiated.
  • I shook my head.
  • "I don't think there's any way out of our present predicament but if you could suggest something, then am all ears," I told her.
  • Her eyes darted around us as she went deep in thought, She paced the length of the forest trying to think of a solution.
  • "Am already betrothed and there is no way I could return to my pack to tell my father "she began.
  • I felt my smile fade away.
  • There was always something that would always break a mating ritual and that was when one of the mates already belonged to another. A werewolf's word was his honor and it couldn't be broken.
  • "What do we do now?" she asked.
  • I watched her face turn solemn as I gave it a thought.
  • She winced in pain as I cut my finger unconsciously across a branch.
  • "See?"I told her.
  • "What have you done to me? why did I feel pain when you cut your hand across that branch?" she questioned.
  • "It's because we're mated," I told her matter-of-factly.
  • Her eyes widened in horror.
  • "Does that mean I would die when you die?" She asked.
  • I laughed at her naivety. She must have been a fledgling when she had turned.
  • "No, but you would die internally. Have you ever heard of the expression that you die a thousand deaths? That's what it means"I explained.
  • "You don't expect me to just be stuck with you for life?!" she cried.
  • The only way I can let you go is if you get through me first"I told her.
  • She accepted instantly. I arched a brow up at her.
  • "Are you sure?"I asked skeptically.
  • "Yes am sure. If that is the only way" she told me gearing up into a fight stance.
  • I put one foot behind me, urging her on.
  • She rushed towards me with her fist, her silver hair whipping behind her as she attacked.
  • "You can't beat me, "I told her quietly as I moved to sidestep her punch. She raised a hand from under her to land a downward blow but I was swift to avoid her. Getting an opening, I struck then, landing a punch towards her which sent her flying so far away, that she hit her back against a tree bark but she didn't relent. She charged towards me again after getting her balance but she was smarter this time, she pulled out her claws and managed to slash my chest. I staggered back in pain but the gnash healed almost instantly.
  • I smiled back at her staring into her eyes as she panted heavily, ready for another attack. It seems she did have it in her.
  • She charged towards me but this time, I caught her hand mid-air and flung her away sending her spinning on the floor. She grunted but got back on her feet. She paused to spit out blood before charging towards me again.
  • "Do you hate me that much?"I asked as I caught her fist mid-way, wrapping my hand around her fist.
  • She sent her other fist colliding with my jaw and I staggered back a little, taking two steps back.
  • "No. I don't"
  • "But I want to go home," she told me.
