Chapter 4 Could You Be Our Daddy
- "I don't know your mummy. Besides, two people need to like each other to be together."
- Arthur remembered what Luna had said earlier, and his voice grew cold.
- He thought meeting the two boys was a coincidence, but now he knew she had followed him.
- Was she hell-bent on trying to marry a rich man?
- However, Arthur hid his true feelings so well that Dax could not tell what he was really thinking.
- Pax, on the other hand, pulled Dax to the side and said, "Mister, my brother doesn't know any better. We're sorry for disturbing you. We'll be going back now. Bye-bye!"
- "Okay then. Goodbye!"
- Arthur felt a sense of familiarity when he met Pax's eyes.
- He liked the two boys but disliked their mother. He found her deceptive and would prefer it if they did not meet again.
- Before leaving, Arthur paid for Luna's table.
- "Daxton Smith, have some self-respect!"
- Pax pulled Dax to the side and scolded him. "Can't you tell he doesn't like our mummy? Stop calling him Mr. Handsome! Or do you think he's our real daddy?!"
- "What do you mean? I think he likes me."
- Dax tugged Pax's hand and pouted, "Pax, don't you think he looks like us, though? Don't you think he may be our daddy?"
- Pax's eyes darkened. He tamped down his emotions.
- "Of course not! He doesn't want you as his son either!"
- Dax's eyes welled up with tears.
- Pax led Dax back to their table.
- Luna, who had been chatting with someone, immediately stopped when she saw Dax's tear-filled eyes.
- "What's happened?" She asked worriedly.
- "I'm fine, Mummy." I just tripped while coming back from the toilets. My butt hurts."
- Dax grimaced as if he really did take a tumble.
- "Were you running?"
- Luna patted Dax on the head. "Alright. Just be more careful next time!"
- Dax looked up at his mum. "Okay, Mummy."
- They continued with their meal happily. While deshelling some crab for her sons, Luna heard a gasp.
- "Luna! It's you!"
- Luna looked up to see a woman standing at their table. Her eyes shone maliciously.
- "You're back. Your father was talking about you recently, and here you are."
- The woman was Ariadne Lowes—Luna's stepmother.
- Ariadne was her father's mistress. She used her feminine wiles to manipulate Edward and undermine Luna.
- Luna's eyes hardened when she recalled the horrible things they did to her.
- "I was wondering why it was so cloudy when the forecast said it would be sunny today!"
- Ariadne smirked. She knew Luna was talking about her. She shifted her gaze to the two boys sitting next to Luna and asked, "These two boys wouldn't happen to be yours by chance?"
- "What's it got to do with you?"
- "As your father's wife, I deserve to be spoken to with respect!"
- Ariadne suppressed a smile. She wanted Luna to know she had successfully married Luna's father.
- However, instead of being surprised, Luna continued sipping her tea and said coolly, "Congratulations! You finally managed to sleep your way to the top!"
- "What do you mean by that?"
- Ariadne glowered at Luna. She hated being reminded of her past as Luna's father's mistress.
- "I meant what I said."
- Ariadne couldn't control her anger and yelled back at her. "If there's something wrong with the b*tch, there'll be something wrong with the pup!"
- Pax jumped down from his chair and kicked Ariadne in the shin.
- He angrily told her off, "You old witch! How dare you insult my mummy!"
- "You little brat, who are you calling an old witch?"
- Ariadne whipped her hand back to slap the child, but Luna caught her arm.
- "Get lost before I beat you to death."
- Luna glared at Ariadne threateningly.
- "That bitch!"
- Ariadne withdrew her hand and scowled back.
- "Do I need to remind you of your trashy past? The entire city knows you were sleeping around and seducing multiple men when you were young. You are exactly like your mother. Shameless sluts…"
- There was a loud thud. Luna sent Ariadne flying with a kick.
- Ariadne didn't see how Luna kicked her. All she felt was a dull ache in her chest and a sharp pain in her ribs and lower abdomen.
- With a trembling hand, she pointed at Luna. "Just you wait!" Ariadne's voice quivered, "Your father will hear about this!"
- "Is that so?"
- Luna approached her. Her long legs made the distance short.
- Ariadne instinctively took a step back. But it was no use.
- Luna gripped Ariadne by the chin. Her other hand was still in her pocket, and she smiled at her. But something about the smile sent shivers down Ariadne's spine.
- "I'm… I'm warning you. Don't mess with me!"
- Ariadne gulped. She regretted provoking Luna.
- Luna was like a starving wolf, and Ariadne, her small, quivering prey with nowhere to run.
- "Don't worry. I'm not going to kill you."
- Luna's grip on Ariadne's chin tightened. "Since you're here, you might as well pass a message to Edward for me. Tell him I'm back!"
- She was back to reclaim everything that was rightfully hers.
- "Your father spent years looking for you. He wanted to make it up to you. But neither of us thought you would end up like this. You're such a disappointment to your father, Luna."
- "Make it up to me?"
- Luna's lips curled into a smile. She patted Ariadne on the face.
- "Indeed, he should make it up to me. But I want more than that. I want the entire Smith's fortune."
- Luna whispered into Ariadne's ear. She rose and heard her scream, "You're insane! Do you think you can take over the entire family just because your dead mother left you some shares? It's never going to happen, I'm telling you!"
- Luna chuckled as if Ariadne had said something funny. Rubbing her ear, she said, "I'm not going to think about it. I'm just going to do it!"
- She reached for her purse and handed a card to the waiter.
- "Bill, please."
- "Don't forget to add on the cost for the damage as well," Luna added.
- "Ms. Smith, Mr. Finch has already paid for your table."
- The waiter refused her card and nodded respectfully.
- "Don't think you can do whatever you want just because you have someone rich backing you, Luna. He'll kick you out sooner or later."
- Listening to Ariadne's taunts, Luna withdrew her card.
- Her eyes were ice cold. "I was hunted and on the run every single day during my time overseas, thanks to you and him. I'm alive and standing here now for one reason. And that is to give you a taste of your own medicine. I want you to know what it feels like to be hunted."
