- “The problem is that you offer it to me with terms that can only logically be explained as self-satisfying for you …” she falters because she realizes she’s rambling now. And at some point she’s afraid that if she keeps talking, private thoughts may tumble out—thoughts about him. And if she slips, then … he’ll know she thinks about him more than she should.
- Nicholas sidles up next to her, leaning his shoulder on the glass, staring at her profile. Their silence extends for several moments, her anxiety ratcheting from his quiet scrutiny.
