Chapter 72 A Protest in the Capital
- The palace was quiet after the sudden layoffs. Even my maids moved about without making a sound. Mary stared at me more often in the days that followed and I could almost hear her internal struggle. It was good that she did not switch sides at the drop of a hat but I was beginning to get impatient.
- “Mary, how are the other girls behaving? I hope they are respectful towards you,” I said as she picked out my accessories for the day. She was now the head of my maids so she didn’t do much work asides from ordering the other girls around. It meant I didn’t see her as often as the other girls but I didn’t mind.
- “They are respectful,” she muttered in a quiet voice, her usual hostile gaze and tone gone.
