Chapter 2 She Was the Doctor Who Had to Save the First Love

  • A month later, at the hospital, everyone stood ready outside the emergency room.
  • A man rushed over in strides. The suit he wore was perfectly neat, but it seemed a little more worn than usual. It was Liam. He looked at the entrance to the emergency room, a hint of worry flashing across his cold eyes. Then, he glanced at Cedric, asking, "How long has she been inside?"
  • Cedric was anxious as well. "Miss Newman's condition was even worse than we thought; she fainted on the way here. However, Dr. Lindsay hasn't arrived yet."
  • "Isn't she back in the country already?"
  • "Yes, her assistant said before that she has already settled down in the country, so she won't be untraceable like she used to be in the past. However, for some unknown reason, we're unable to contact her anymore."
  • Cedric reported the current situation, saying, "But another doctor has entered, so they might be able to buy some time."
  • The subordinates at the side didn't even dare to breathe too loudly. After all, everyone knew that the person in the emergency room was the love of Liam's life.
  • There were also rumors that Liam divorced his wife, whom he had been married to for ten years, just to make space for that woman.
  • A set of footsteps rang out nearby. When Liam heard the familiar sound, he turned to see a masked woman wearing a white coat. A crowd of people were following her.
  • Even though it had been a month since they last met, Liam was so familiar with her that he could recognize her from just her eyes. Even Cedric recognized her; she was Liam's ex-wife, Abbie Marshall.
  • What a surprise to see her here!
  • An impossible guess presented itself in Liam's mind. He gazed deeply at the woman in front of him. Abbie remained calm as she said indifferently, "You're in the way."
  • The head of the hospital, who had tagged along, hastily said, "Mr. Henderson, this is Dr. Lindsay. Please make way for her. It won't bode well for the patient if there's any unnecessary delay."
  • The woman's expression remained cold, but a half-smile crept onto her lips underneath the mask. "He's right. Don't blame me if the patient dies."
  • Liam clenched his fists tightly. At the side, Cedric felt that Miss Newman would be done for.
  • How can Liam's ex-wife possibly rescue his first love in all seriousness?
  • Liam looked at the head of the hospital. "Is she really Dr. Lindsay?"
  • The head of the hospital nodded enthusiastically. Under the impression that Liam was worried about Abbie's identity, he immediately said, "Of course she is. Don't worry, Mr. Henderson. Just a few days ago, Dr. Lindsay carried out an emergency operation at our hospital, and we verified her identification documents as well. It's her, no doubt about it. She may look young, but her skills are amazing. Relax, Mr. Henderson. If Dr. Lindsay is the one operating, she can raise the 10% success rate to 50%."
  • But there is still a 50% chance of it failing! Who knows how much of it is real?
  • Abbie crossed her arms and said nonchalantly and lazily, "If you don't want me to operate, Mr. Henderson, I can leave."
  • "What are your chances of success?"
  • The head of the hospital had just answered the question, but Liam insisted on asking Abbie again.
  • The woman smiled coolly. "Like he said, 50%."
  • When their gazes met, Abbie stare boldly at Liam. Even after all those years, he had never seen that side of her.
  • In his memories, this woman had always been gentle and reserved. She was a dodder flower raised indoors, and she could only rely on him.
  • Or, in those ten years, he never got to know the real her.
  • He stepped aside. "Go ahead."
  • Cedric wanted to say something, but he felt as if there wasn't much to say. At that moment, they had no choice but to let Abbie proceed with the operation.
  • Abbie's lips curved slightly under the mask again as she took another glance at Liam, then walked straight into the emergency room.
  • The large doors of the emergency room were thrown shut once again, and Liam lowered his gaze.
  • In the emergency room, Abbie looked down calmly at the woman. Just as she had wished, she saw the woman's panicked expression.
  • "Abbie? Why are you here?!"
  • Olivia Newman was already anesthetized, so she couldn't move any part of her body. Her face was as pale as a sheet, and it only looked even worse when she saw Abbie.
  • Abbie had always known of Olivia's existence; the latter was Liam's lover.
  • If Liam and Abbie only got married because of their elders, then Liam was truly in love with Olivia. Those two would probably get married soon.
  • But what did that have to do with Abbie? If she minded it that much, Olivia would be long gone by now.
  • Abbie emotionlessly picked up a scalpel. "You'd better cooperate, or you'll be the one dead."
  • Olivia screamed, "I don't want you to operate on me! Go away! Let me see Liam!"
  • The doctors at the side exchanged glances. The patient wasn't cooperating. "Dr. Lindsay, should we—"
  • "It's okay. I only have so much time." Abbie looked half-smilingly at the woman on the sick bed. "I can choose to not operate on her."
  • "No, I don't want you to operate on me! Get out!"
  • Abbie scoffed in disdain, then continued her movements. She said to the doctor next to her, "The patient is too noisy. Give her more anesthetics."
  • "Understood."
  • When more anesthetics were administered, Olivia quickly fainted, and the operating room finally turned quiet.
  • However, even in her sleep, the woman had a look of terror on her face.
  • Everyone was amazed at Abbie's rash decisions, but her calm and composed manner at the operating table gave them a sense of security.
  • Seven hours later, the light at the entrance of the emergency room was turned off.
  • Abbie was the one who opened the door and came out first, and she was greeted by the sight of Liam.
  • Needless to say, he had been standing at the door all this while.
  • "Did you succeed?"
  • "Yes."
  • Abbie took off her mask and nodded calmly.
  • Cedric was speechless as he watched from the sidelines. The two used to be married, but they acted like strangers around each other.
  • It was true that Abbie had already treated Liam like a stranger. The long operation exhausted her greatly, and she couldn't be bothered to say more as she wished to leave more than anything.
  • However, when she was about to pass by Liam, the latter gripped her hand and pulled her in the other direction.
  • The other people from the Henderson Group had never met Abbie before, so they were astonished. Cedric explained, "Mr. Henderson just wanted to ask Dr. Lindsay more questions."
  • But even if he wanted to ask more questions, he didn't have to take her hand, right?
  • What if he was just worried about Olivia's safety?
  • Even though something felt off, the crowd had no choice but to believe it.
  • Abbie was dragged to a desolate corner before she was released.
  • Right after that, the man trapped her in the corner.
  • "How are you Dr. Lindsay?"
  • Liam went straight to the point.
  • Abbie said calmly, "Am I not allowed to do something in my spare time?"
  • Liam looked at her unfriendly attitude, then recalled the gentle behavior she used to adopt. An unknown rage burned in his heart as he took a deep breath.
  • "How's Olivia?"
  • "As I have said, she's safe at the moment," Abbie said, "but she can only continue living if we find a suitable heart for her."
  • She knew early on that Olivia was Liam's childhood friend, and Olivia was born with a heart problem. However, they still couldn't find a suitable heart for her even now, so Olivia had always been physically weak.
  • If I hadn't suddenly gotten married to him, she would've been with him by now, Abbie thought, unamused.
  • Liam pursed his lips. "Got it. Thanks."
  • "No problem. I'm charging you anyway."
  • Abbie answered his questions simply because of her ethics as a doctor.
  • Seeing that she didn't mind, Liam darkened his gaze. "Who exactly are you, Abbie?"
  • How can she be a completely different person from before?
  • Abbie smiled. "We're divorced now, so it doesn't matter anymore. I don't think I'm obliged to answer. You should pay more attention to the love of your life."
  • Liam pursed his lips and wanted to say more, but the woman had already gone off.
  • Her figure was decisive and brash.
  • Cedric hurried over and said in a panicked voice, "Mr. Henderson, Miss Newman woke up. She kept crying and asking for you."
  • The man's gaze sank a little. "On my way."
