Chapter 5 Gold Digger
- “She's such a terrible person. Why did she bite you so forcefully? Your hand is bleeding. Let me take a look. Are you in pain, Jonny?”
- Ximena's sudden approach caused Jonathan to feel uncomfortable.
- He quietly retracted his hand and replied tersely, “I'm fine.”
- “I'm sorry for causing you any trouble. Yvonne was not like that in the past. She failed to secure a job after graduation, and her mother is sick. Perhaps because she's bearing a heavy burden at the moment, she wants me to introduce some wealthy men to her—”
- “I have some matters to attend to at the office. This is a gift for your mother.”
- Inexplicably, Jonathan found Ximena's incessant babble to be annoying.
- It feels different from that night. That woman's tone was soothing, even when her hoarse voice as she begged me to stop.
- After he said that, Ximena saw Yosef, who was standing behind Jonathan, handing something to her.
- Jonathan had turned around and left when she stretched out her hands to receive the item.
- Ximena was reluctant to see him leave as she gazed at his figure from behind. However, her mood swiftly recovered when she opened the expensive-looking box and discovered a set of jewelry worth over tens of million that was recently put up in an auction.
- It seems like Jonathan still cares about me. Anyway, Yvonne is, without a doubt, a risky time bomb.
- Ximena grasped that gift. I must think of a way to make Jonathan despise Yvonne further!
- The night breeze was chilly. Yvonne failed to hail a taxi even after she had walked for a long time. She even felt that blisters had formed on her heels.
- The surroundings were pitch black after she exited the affluent neighborhood. Unexpectedly, it even started to rain. Yvonne suddenly felt nauseous after taking a few steps.
- She stood beside a rubbish bin and puked for a long time.
- A beam of dazzling light shone in her direction all of a sudden.
- Yvonne covered her eyes from the blinding lights and instinctively moved backward to avoid the car. As a result, she accidentally fell into a bush and twisted her ankle.
- The two men inside the car took notice of that.
- “Mr. Lawson, it's Mrs. Lawson.” Yosef, Jonathan's secretary, had served the latter for many years. He had also met with Yvonne at the mansion that night a few days ago.
- Due to her gorgeous appearance, Yosef could remember her even though it was a brief encounter.
- “Mrs. Lawson seemed to have twisted her ankle, and her condition appears to be severe. I heard that a few robberies and assault cases occurred around here a while ago. Mrs. Lawson looks defenseless, and it's dark—”
- “Keep driving.” Jonathan's tone was indecipherable as he piped up and interrupted Yosef's speech.
- “What?” Yosef was dazed for a few seconds.
- Then, clarity washed over him.
- The vehicle drove away afterward.
- Yvonne scrambled to her feet from the patch of grass and unconcernedly removed the soil and dust from her body. Then, she ordered a taxi and got into the vehicle.
- After the taxi turned a corner and disappeared from the road, a car emerged from a lane nearby and trailed far behind the taxi.
- Yosef stared at Jonathan's darkened face, not daring to ask the latter about their destination.
- In fact, even Jonathan did not know where he wanted to go. He was merely driven by his instinct to get to know Yvonne better.
- Although they had interacted a few times, and things had always ended on an unhappy note between them, he could not fathom or explain the unusual feelings he harbored for her.
- That was a sensation Ximena could not provide for him.
- Jonathan knitted his brows. At that moment, his phone rang as he received a notification.
- He unlocked the device and noticed a transaction notification for a credit card payment of five million.
- Jonathan had given Ximena a credit card with no spending limit previously. He had registered the card with his phone number, so he would receive a notification whenever a transaction was made using the card.
- Since she received the credit card, Ximena had been spending millions every day.
- Yosef saw the notification from the corner of his eyes and thought disapprovingly. Ms. Ximena is too greedy. I thought she was...
- “Mr. Lawson, Ms. Ximena is too greedy. She has been introducing herself as Mrs. Lawson in public.”
- Jonathan's gaze darkened slightly. Still, he did not say a word.
- More transaction notifications flooded Jonathan's inbox. Yosef, unable to withstand Ximena's acquisitiveness, could not help but say, “She'll spend all your money if she's allowed to behave like this in the long run.”
- Yosef could already sense her excessive greed even though he had just gotten to know her a few days ago. He reckoned she had most likely saved Jonathan while harboring ulterior motives. After all, Ximena had purchased so many houses in the short period that she started going out with Jonathan.
- Her ill intentions were plain to see.
- “She doesn't have that capability.”
- Even though Ximena's recent behavior had made Jonathan uncomfortable, he thought he owed her that much whenever he was reminded of the events of that fateful night.
- Jonathan lifted his head slightly and glanced at the taxi in front before shutting his eyes. “Go to the company. Also, look into Yvonne's background and personal information and send me a copy later.”
- For some reason, he could not help feeling bothered by her.
