Chapter 10 A New Opportunity

  • Late at night, Yvonne browsed through several job vacancies on her computer but failed to find a suitable one.
  • The woman then accessed a website she had not visited for a while and stared at its contents for a long time.
  • It was only when she got a call from Walter that she returned to her senses. With her eyes slightly lowered, Yvonne immediately exited the webpage.
  • “You want me to return to the Lawson residence?” inquired Yvonne, who was surprised after listening to Walter.
  • “I know I've wronged you for the past three years and that you must hate me for it. That's probably why you stopped contacting me,” explained Walter like a guilty child.
  • “That's not it...” denied Yvonne. I certainly did not stop contacting him because of resentment. I'm just too busy with work, and I also have to take care of my mother. I've been spreading myself too thin.
  • Also, Yvonne was convinced that Walter would focus all his attention on Jonathan, his beloved grandson who had just returned. Unexpectedly, Walter still cared a lot about her.
  • “I'll visit you soon, okay? I'm just really busy with work right now.” Yvonne knew she had to be gentle and patient with an elderly like Walter. Walter had relatively poor health, and his blood pressure would quickly rise if he got emotional.
  • For the past three years, Yvonne would visit Walter from time to time because she treated him like family. Therefore, she could not bring herself to do anything to hurt him.
  • “I know how important your work is. Knowing that you still care about me is enough.”
  • Yvonne then made up stories about the interesting things that happened to her at work. Then, she relayed them to Walter, who immediately let out a burst of hearty laughter that resounded throughout his bedroom.
  • Not long after that, Yvonne heard Walter's butler urging him to retire to bed. Yvonne asked Walter, “Isn't it time for you to rest?”
  • “I'm not sleepy yet!”
  • “You have to rest when it's time to do so, Grandpa. I'll call you again, okay? Good night!”
  • Walter received news of Yvonne's situation after ending the phone call. “Are you telling me that she's been fired?”
  • Hence, the butler told Walter everything about how Yvonne got dismissed.
  • The woman did her best to make Walter laugh instead of complaining to him on the phone, which made him pity her even more. “That reminds me. Isn't Jonathan's company looking for a translator? Get a middleman to reach out to Yvonne and make sure to do everything by the book because I don't want her to get suspicious. She's a smart one, you know?”
  • The butler then nodded in response. Gazing at Walter's white hair, the butler could not help but be reminded of how much time the elderly man had spent worrying about Jonathan. If Mr. Lawson could settle down sooner, Old Mr. Lawson would live out the rest of his life in peace.
  • Around eleven o'clock, Yvonne got a call from her former teacher, who had a job to offer her. “You want me to work as an Astorian translator for Constellation Group?”
  • Yvonne had heard of Constellation Group because it was a large company.
  • As expected, she found the job vacancy online when she looked up the company.
  • Astoria was not a powerful country. On the contrary, it was a poor and closed country riddled with warfare.
  • There were only a handful of people in Yaleview who were versed in Astorian. Yvonne was only one of them because she used to live in Astoria with her mother when she was little.
  • Yvonne was requested for an interview shortly after submitting her resume.
  • Everything went as planned.
  • The following day, Yvonne headed to the address she was sent for the interview. Staring at the tall and magnificent-looking office building before her, Yvonne realized just how small her old workplace was.
  • The interviewers did not take long to get to the point since Yvonne did not have much work experience. “You know the Astorian language?”
  • “Yes.”
  • “I see you know a lot of languages. Why don't you try translating this document for me?”
  • Meanwhile, Ximena followed behind Yosef as the latter gave her a tour of the office building, which happened to be the headquarters of Jonathan's company.
  • Ximena got tired from walking around, so she decided to rest somewhere. However, just when she was about to do so, she noticed Yvonne, who was in the middle of the interview.
  • Immediately, Ximena's eyes widened.
  • I thought she was fired. How did she manage to find a job in Jonathan's company?
  • Ximena watched as the interviewers sitting across from Yvonne nodded at Yvonne before uttering, “You can start tomorrow.”
  • With a grim expression on her face, Ximena pushed Yosef out of her way and rushed into the interview room as soon as Yvonne left. “The woman who came here for an interview just now is not qualified at all. Are you seriously going to hire her?”
  • Almost all the interviewers knew that Ximena was Jonathan's girlfriend, so they quickly explained, “Ms. Walker, she may not have much work experience, but she knows a lot of languages. We should give someone with decent potential like her a chance...”
  • “I used to be her colleague, and I heard she got fired for leaking the contents of her translation work. Are you sure someone like that won't betray our company for her own interest?”
  • “Well...”
  • “The breach of confidentiality is a serious matter. How do you think Jonny will react when he finds out about this?”
  • “We know what to do, Ms. Walker.”
