Chapter 3 In Case Of An Unexpected Demise

  • How could Cassandra possibly forget?
  • When Meredith had her car accident, it was Cassandra who called the emergency hotline. She was also the one who donated Rh-negative blood to Meredith. Thaddeus was grateful to her and promised to fulfill Cassandra's request.
  • At the time, Cassandra had only one request—to become Thaddeus' only mate, to be his Luna.
  • It was a thought that took deep root in her heart the moment she first saw Thaddeus in high school.
  • Back then, only when the doctor had declared that there was no chance of Meredith waking up that Thaddeus begrudgingly agreed to her request.
  • However, Thaddeus had always been indifferent toward her.
  • Cassandra lifted her chin, staring at him unflinchingly. “Thaddeus, don't you even realize that I am your destined mate? Why should I have to move out just because she's back?”
  • Thaddeus' gaze suddenly shifted toward her, the expression on his face gradually darkening. The profound depth in his eyes became even more terrifying. “Why? Because Meredith claimed that you were the one who hit her with your car six years ago!”
  • Cassandra was initially taken aback, then she surprisingly laughed, though her laughter held a touch of bitterness. “So whatever Meredith says is the truth! Let me ask you, did you personally investigate this?”
  • Thaddeus steadily approached her, ultimately cornering her against the wall. His voice was icy as he challenged her, “So, do you think I should trust Meredith, or you, a woman known for your scheming ways?”
  • The man had been staring at her with his dark eyes.
  • There was nothing but disgust and disdain in his eyes.
  • “I didn't!” Cassandra firmly pressed her lips together.
  • Thaddeus looked down at her condescendingly, his dark eyes cold and icy, devoid of any warmth. “You're a smart woman. You should know what to do.”
  • Then, he left, leaving nothing but a cold, silent room behind.
  • Cassandra looked at her reflection in the mirror, her complexion pale and weary, yet filled with rage.
  • “Cassandra...” Haley softly called out to Cassandra, sensing an unprecedented anger brewing deep within her. “Why would Meredith, that despicable woman, frame you! You clearly haven't done anything so contemptible.”
  • Haley couldn't help but feel a sense of regret for Cassandra. She used to be such a proud individual, yet in this relationship, she had been reduced to such a humble state.
  • It was truly laughable. This so-called destined mate was nothing short of a disaster for Cassandra.
  • After a long while, Cassandra slowly exhaled. “Meredith! How dare you frame me!”
  • In the still of the night, Cassandra stealthily made her way to the hospital, locating the ward where Meredith was staying.
  • As Luna from Dark Moon Pack, Cassandra had the authority to accurately locate Meredith's hospital room.
  • Shrewd as Cassandra was, she specifically chose a time when Thaddeus was absent to confront Meredith, and she also brought along a pen recorder.
  • The top floor of the hospital was exclusively for VIP patients.
  • Upon locating Ward 1203, Cassandra gave a knock on the door. Then, pressing down on the handle, she pushed the door open and walked right in.
  • On the sickbed, the delicate woman appeared to be startled. However, upon recognizing her visitor, a hint of a smile tugged at the corner of her lips. “Ms. Raeburn, you gave me quite a fright barging in here in the middle of the night.”
  • Cassandra tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Her smile was warm, yet she appeared distant. “Did you tell Alpha that I hit you with my car?”
  • With an innocent look on her face, Meredith said, “Isn't that the truth? Back then, weren't you jealous of me being with Alpha? It was you who wanted to run me over with a car.”
  • “Meredith, you accused me of being the murderer in front of Alpha, all just to see me ousted from Dark Moon Pack, didn't you? But aren't you being a bit naive?” Cassandra scoffed. “After being unconscious for six years, have you gone foolish?”
  • Over the course of six years, even if the pack members didn't particularly like her, they gradually came to accept and get used to Cassandra being Luna. Meredith wanted to replace Cassandra, but it wasn't going to be easy, especially with the matriarch of Dark Moon Pack, Agnes, around.
  • Agnes was a traditionalist. She firmly believed that an Alpha should be with his fated Luna, as this was the only way the Moon Goddess would bestow blessings upon the pack.
  • In the foreseeable future and throughout her life, Cassandra would always be Thaddeus' Luna.
  • Clearly, Meredith had also considered this aspect, and in an instant, her gaze toward Cassandra was filled with murderous intent.
  • Haley sensed the dangerous aura emanating from Meredith. She cautioned Cassandra, “Be careful. I didn't detect her inner wolf, but I can tell she alone is not an easy adversary.”
  • “Even if I'm branded with disgrace, I remain the Luna of Dark Moon Pack, the mate gifted to Alpha by the Moon Goddess. And you? You'll forever be nothing more than a mistress,” Cassandra retorted without hesitation.
  • Since Meredith dared to slander her, there was no reason for her to speak politely with Meredith.
  • The term “mistress” sharply pierced through Meredith's heart. Only she knew best how she had won the love of the Alpha, Thaddeus.
  • Meredith's hands were tightly clenched, her nails almost digging into her palms. Her eyes, blazing with fury, were fixed intently on Cassandra. It was this b*tch, Cassandra, who had stolen everything from her!
  • Urged by Haley, Cassandra left the hospital room. She was unable to coax a confession out of Meredith from this trip, but at least she had a clear understanding of Meredith's attitude toward her.
  • “Be careful, this woman and her pack aren't to be trifled with,” Haley warned seriously. The audacity of a woman without a wolf to act so brazenly in front of Cassandra was a clear testament to the strong backing Thaddeus and her own pack provided her.
  • “Kill her!” Meredith's eyes were a blazing crimson, her voice hoarse as she commanded over the phone, “Kill her!”
  • Under the high-hanging full moon, Cassandra continued to navigate through the forest. Soon, she and Haley noticed that they were being followed by two figures.
  • Instantly, Cassandra transformed into a beautiful, pure white wolf. Two figures clearly bearing ill intent followed behind her, but she was not keen on a direct confrontation.
  • During the six years she spent in Dark Moon Pack, her strength showed no signs of improvement. In fact, her physical condition seemed to deteriorate progressively.
  • The two figures behind her let out a wolfish howl. Clearly, they had transformed and were now tracking her.
  • “Run, Cassandra! These two wolves are clearly after your life!” No sooner had Haley finished his words than a black wolf from behind pounced on Cassandra, biting into her shoulder. It tore a chunk of flesh from her, causing her to cry out in pain as blood spurted from her wound.
  • A black wolf stood in front of Cassandra, blocking her path, while another wolf cut off her escape route from behind.
  • Cassandra wanted to run in a different direction, but the wolf lunged at her from behind, attacking her abdomen. Its sharp claws tore through her belly, and she could distinctly feel her flesh being ripped apart. The sharp pain radiated to every limb, yet she was powerless to fight back.
  • Subsequently, a brown wolf forcefully kicked her toward a nearby large tree.
  • With a resounding crack, the large tree was hit and broken. Cassandra realized that her ribs were also broken. She turned her head, breathing weakly and trembling all over.
  • “Cassandra! He... his claws, they're poisoned!” Haley exclaimed in shock. The claws were coated with wolf's poison. It was clear that they didn't want Cassandra to survive.
  • “Who...cough, cough,” Cassandra found it difficult to even breathe. “Who sent you?”
  • The two wolves didn't respond to her. Instead, they lunged at her simultaneously. The black wolf's sharp teeth pierced through her throat. This was the first time Cassandra had experienced the taste of death up close.
  • “Haley... I'm... sorry...” No wolf could survive a sufficient dose of poison. At this point, Cassandra could no longer sense Haley.
  • Cassandra couldn't accept it. If she were to die just like this, what would become of her Sandstrider Pack? Meredith had even falsely accused her, so what would happen to her reputation? And there was Quentin, who would surely grieve upon learning of her death...
  • After six years as Dark Moon Pack's Luna, was this really how it would end?
  • If only we could relive all of this, how wonderful that would be?
  • Cassandra watched as the two wolves gradually approached her, the cool moonlight reflecting off her face. Her emerald green eyes radiated a deep, haunting glow, filled with regret and defiance. After a long moment, she closed her eyes, and tears fell.
  • No one knew that the Luna of Dark Moon Pack had met her end so mysteriously in a secluded forest, and on the very day of her wedding anniversary at that.
