• The next morning, the atmosphere at the Sterling mansion was tense. The grandeur of the house, with its high ceilings and luxurious furnishings, seemed almost stifling in the serious mood that pervaded the room where Alex, Asher, Martha, and Edward had gathered. The family had convened to discuss Alex’s revelation from the night before.
• Martha paced the length of the room, her face flushed with anger and disbelief. Edward sat in his favorite armchair, his expression one of deep conflict. Asher leaned against the fireplace, arms crossed, his demeanor calm and supportive. Alex stood by the large window, looking out but not really seeing the beautiful garden beyond.
