• Dani remained withdrawn and uncharacteristically silent as we drove aimlessly around Santa Monica.
• If I cared enough, I would have dug deeper and squeezed the backstory out of her. She was vulnérable and I could have easily manipulated her weakness and got her to spill her guts. But this wasn’t my line of work, I wasn’t her shrink and I wasn’t her petit ami. Even calling us friends would be stretching it. She meant nothing to me, she was just a means to an end and intended to keep it that way. I was already too invested in this and was losing focus on the whole reason I was even with her. Zach had told me everything about her and I tried to use it to our advantage.
