  • “Why am I the only one left to pick up the pieces?” Alexander murmured under his breath as he paced the length of his study. The sound of his steps echoed against the hardwood bottom, a constant memorial of the insulation that now sounded to define his every move. He'd watched Alexander’s metamorphosis over the once many days — formerly a man of unwavering ambition and confidence now reduced to a shadow visited by his own choices.
  • Alexander stopped suddenly, his eyes locking onto Martin’s upset aspect. “Sit down? I don’t know what’s left wing to sit down for,” he snapped, though indeed he knew the bitterness of his tone was laced with despair. He ran a hand through his dark hair, which now sounded disheveled as if reflecting the chaos within.
