Chapter 7
- Emily's POV
- Sadness was an understatement. I couldn't even process my thoughts any longer or the way I felt. It got worse day after day and I couldn't even attend lectures. I couldn't tell my parents either, they will reject me right away. I would stay in my room alone and cry.
- I wished for Professor Calvin but does he even know what's going on? Even if he suspected something was wrong, he wouldn't come to the girl's hostel and then I didn't have his number. The only person I had in mind was Eva, worst of all I didn't get her number. I would have but everything seemed to go worse on my first day in college.
- “Why stay in college when I can no longer concentrate?” I asked myself, then began packing my stuff right away. My sister’s residence came to mind. Less than five hundred dollars, I'd get a flight to Scotland where I'll reveal everything to her.
- And this is just what I did. I left Oxford on the late sunny afternoon of Friday, which was the weekend. I was sure to see her at home. I'd already booked a flight and paid for the flight ticket with my phone. I didn't inform anyone, I was too ashamed to even tell Eva despite the fact she wanted to get close to me.
- “Why didn't she even come to check on me?” I questioned myself, doubting if she had true intentions but then I realized I didn't even tell her my full name, my number or that I lived in the hostel. I couldn't blame her further, neither could I blame Calvin but I was just so curious about his statement and wanted him badly.
- “Sis, I hope you're at home. I'll be paying a surprise visit to you. Since I came here, I haven't had a chance.” I lied. I spoke through a voice note and sent the message to her WhatsApp account.
- “Okay,” she immediately replied. She was online. “It's good you're coming today, sorry I didn't tell you we're having a diaspora family weekend party. You will get to see your brother who got adopted before your birth for the first time after many years. He left us when you were still a kid.” She told me and I giggled. For the moment, I forgot about my problems, I was after this party and meeting relatives I've never seen before, most especially my brother.
- I heard he was adopted at a very young age as an orphan but the moment he grew up to his teens, he traveled out to live an independent life. Dad got into a rift with him for not seeking permission from him before packing out and banned him from entering the estate. I wasn't lucky enough to see him, my siblings who are older than me do tell me how handsome he was.
- “Sierra, is bro gonna attend? I want to meet him for the first time.”
- “Yes, he will.” My sister who didn't like talking too much responded.
- “Okay. I can't wait to arrive.”
- I arrived in Scotland after three hours of flying on air. Since it was the weekend, my sister and I had a family weekend party. As I was told, my sister was too busy to come pick me up at the airport. She sent the directions to her house instead. I was new in Scotland so I had to ask the taxi driver to take me there. I showed him the directions from my phone.
- As I was in the taxi, I heard my phone ring. I peered through the screen and it was my sister. I quickly picked it.
- “Where are you?”
- “I've arrived. I'm inside a taxi coming to your place.”
- “Alright, I'll be waiting for you. Come, so you could assist me in setting the house for the party.”
- “Okay.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. I breathed hard and looked outside. I was already burdened with my troubles, I was expecting some soft treatment and her consoling me that everything will be alright but she only saw me as an aide. It's quite sad she doesn't know what's going on. I wondered what her reaction would be when she knows, will she embrace me and pity me for falling into the same trap she did or will she get angry at me for repeating the same mistake she did?
- Whatever is gonna be her reaction is gonna be better than dad's. I knew it myself. Dad's rejection would be outright, although the custom of my pack requires a girl marrying the man that impregnated her if they are both mates.
- “Lucky me!” I scoffed. This could have been me if I wasn't from a conservative family. Talking of my mom, she wouldn't even entertain the thought of her daughter marrying when she hasn't even figured out her path in life. I knew for sure she would be most disappointed in me.
- Calvin is my heartbeat. I wouldn't think twice if I was asked to marry him but then he held a secret he didn't want to tell me and because of this, he pushed me away from his life. He didn't want me around.
- I sighed.
- “We're here!” I heard the taxi driver mutter. I cleared my mind and eyes of the thoughts which had clouded my senses. There was a cool family apartment here, it was a large compound. This must be one of the house's dad bought here in Scotland and upon kicking her out of the family, she came to take asylum here.
- I scanned the entire surrounding, it was so serene. No wonder the family party will be held here.
- “Oh thanks. Let me call her now to confirm.” I pulled out my phone but was about to call her when the front door opened and I saw her walk out. It's been many years since I set my eyes on her. I got so excited that I threw the money on the driver, opened the door and dashed out with my mini-luggage. I ran to hug her.
