Chapter 5
- She could tell from the empathetic expression on her mother’s face how humiliating it was to be sent back home by her husband on their first day of marriage.
- However, Jane was feeling very at ease since they were not actually married.
- After touring the house, Jane followed Evelyn upstairs and, despite Evelyn’s hesitation to speak, she still chose a guest room to stay in.
- Sitting in the VIP room at the airport, the man had a laptop on his lap and a mobile phone in his hand.
- His face was devoid of emotion and his voice was monotone as he said, “If she wants to, she can do whatever she pleases.”
- After ending the call, he continued typing on the keyboard.
- Not long after, an announcement for boarding was made.
- He closed his notebook, handed it to Duke beside him, stood up and walked towards the boarding gate.
- He hoped that when he returned, she would have adjusted to being Mrs. Damien.
- After spending one night at the villa, Jane went to the hospital the next day to visit her younger brother.
- Her younger brother, Jonathan, had been born with a congenital heart disease and when he was 16 years old, he suffered from heart failure due to a car accident he got into while saving her. He had been hospitalized ever since.
- After their mother passed away, Jane took on the responsibility of earning money to pay for her brother’s medical bills.
- In the ward, there was a young man lying on the hospital bed who looked to be around 20 years old. He had gentle and handsome facial features and unusually pale skin.
- The only downside was that he was too thin.
- It wasn’t just Jane who had worked hard to pay for his medical bills over the years, but also Jonathan who had fought against his serious illness.
- “Joe, how are you feeling? Are you feeling better?” Jane entered the room carrying a thermos and looked at her younger brother with concern.
- When Jonathan saw his sister come in, a glimmer of light appeared in his eyes.
- “Jane, you’re here. I’m fine, how about you?”
- “Of course I’m fine too.” Jane’s gaze fell on his dirty clothes.
- She furrowed her brows, “Didn’t the nurse wash your clothes?”
- Jonathan’s eyes flickered and he said, “No, I accidentally dirtied them this morning.”
- Jane looked at him, incredulous that the stain appeared to have been there for a while.
- A young boy on the bed next to him couldn’t take it anymore and said, “Jane, Joe’s nurse hasn’t come for over a week.”
- Jane’s face changed slightly as she looked at Jonathan, “What’s going on?”
- Jonathan’s eyes were full of stubbornness, “Jane, I don’t need a nurse, I can take care of myself.”
- Jane scolded, “You can take care of yourself with such a dirty look?!”
- However, she knew he didn’t want to burden her.
- As long as she was able, she wouldn’t let her brother suffer.
- She held back her tears, changed the subject, and said, “I made porridge for you, let’s have some porridge first.”
- She poured the lean meat porridge from the thermos.
- Jonathan looked at her pointedly, his eyes filled with distress.
- “Sister, why won’t you give up?” His voice was low.
- With a “snap”, Jane placed the thermos heavily on the table.
- She looked at her younger brother with a serious expression, “How many times do I have to tell you, I’ll take care of the financial matters. You just need to rest assured, and I’ll contact a nurse to take care of you soon. Don’t mess around anymore.”
- “But Jane, I don’t want to be a burden to you.” Jonathan’s expression was gloomy, and his eyes were full of guilt.
- He’d been a burden to his family since he was a child, and even more so in recent years.
- At times, Jane wished he wasn’t so sensible. She said in a deep voice, “You’re my only family in this world. How can you bear to see me alone?”
- “Jane, I...” Jonathan looked at his sister with tears in his eyes.
- Of course, he didn’t want to leave his sister, but he didn’t want to drag her down either.
- Jane handed him a tissue to wipe his tears away and said sternly, “You’re a grown man, why are you still crying? You’re not allowed to say such things again.”
- Jonathan looked at her and nodded with difficulty.
- Jane took the porridge from the table and spoon-fed it to her younger sibling, “Come on, taste your sister’s cuisine.”
- Await Jonathan’s slumber.
- Jane proceeded to the open area at the back of the hospital and contacted the cleaning agency.
- “What’s wrong with your staff? They leave without any sense of responsibility.”
- “It’s just a kid playing around. You wouldn’t understand. As the employer, shouldn’t you be notified?”
- “I hope you fulfill your promises.” Jane ended the call, her face displaying frustration.
- Remembering Jonathan’s struggles during their stay at the hospital, she felt guilty and concerned.
- “Why are you so upset?” A male voice interrupted her thoughts.
- Jane turned around to see a young man in a white coat approaching her.
- He had gold-rimmed glasses and an elegant demeanor. He was Peter Tuchel, Jonathan’s attending physician.
- “It’s nothing.” Jane nodded slightly, grateful. “Dr. Peter, thank you for taking care of Jonathan.”
- “I’ve told you many times to call me Peter,” he said helplessly.
- Jane smiled, “I’m sorry, I keep forgetting.”
- Peter appeared disappointed. Jane was always like this – indifferent to everything except Jonathan.
- “How’s work been lately? You’ve been visiting less and less in the past six months. Are you busy?” Peter inquired with concern.
- Jane’s smile vanished instantly. Wasn’t it because of Ciara that she had been so occupied in the past six months that she had no time to care for Jonathan?
- Thinking back, Ciara’s nitpicking was probably aimed at her on purpose.
- “What’s wrong? Are you unhappy at work?” Peter noticed the shift in Jane’s demeanor.
- Jane shook her head, “No.”
- Peter hesitated for a moment before suggesting, “If possible, I think it’s best for you to leave the entertainment industry. It’s a complicated environment that doesn’t suit you.”
- Jane smiled but didn’t respond.
- If she had the option, she wouldn’t have entered this industry or fallen for Ciara’s tricks for six months.
- “Am I wrong? Are you angry?” Peter asked, sensing Jane’s silence.
- Jane shook her head, “No, I was just lost in thought.”
- “Ah, I see.” Peter breathed a sigh of relief.
- After conversing for some time, Peter was summoned elsewhere.
- Jane was on her way back to the ward when her phone abruptly rang.
- She answered and saw that it was Ciara Tyla on the other end.
- Upon reading those three words, her rage began to escalate once more.
- How could Ciara have the audacity to call her after what she had done?
- Jane pressed the accept button straightaway, her tone icy as she inquired, “Why are you still calling? Are you trying to flaunt your influence?”
- “You seem to be quite upset; was it difficult to please Director Rebel last night?” the woman giggled.
- “Ciara, with your extensive experience, no one knows better than you how challenging it is to satisfy a man like Director Rebel,” Jane retorted sarcastically.
- “Do you realize who you’re talking to?” Ciara’s voice was now brimming with anger.
- In the past, Jane would have been patient.
- However, now that she knew Ciara’s true colors, she couldn’t tolerate it any longer.
- “Who else could it be? Of course, it’s Miss Ciara, the actress who sleeps with every director in the industry. I just hope that your secrets won’t be exposed, or else dealing with the directors’ wives will be no easy feat,” Jane said with a sneer.
- After Jane finished speaking, she disconnected the call and blocked Ciara’s phone number and Instagram account.
- She didn’t want to hear that woman’s voice ever again.
- On the other end, Ciara’s face was red with fury.
- “You impudent girl! How dare you ridicule me without even examining your own behavior!”
- She dialed another number and asked with a smile, “Hey, Director Rebel, were you happy with the present I gave you yesterday?”
- “You have the nerve to say that there was no one in the room at all, Ciara! Are you making a fool of me?!”
