Chapter 4

  • After two hours, a young lady emerged from the court house accompanied by an attractive gentleman.
  • Jane held the crimson booklet, still finding it hard to believe.
  • She had married in such a hasty manner, and worse still, with a stranger from a one-night stand.
  • To make matters worse, the person she married was the third heir of the Wolfe family, who had a swarm of women vying for his attention in New York.
  • “Miss Austen, congratulations on your wedding!” Damien suddenly said.
  • Jane looked up and saw Damien holding a marriage certificate in one hand, while the other was extended towards her.
  • His fingers were slender and pale, more delicate than a woman’s.
  • His attractive face was tense, his light brown eyes were composed, and he appeared professional.
  • No, this marriage was nothing but a merger of interests.
  • Jane took a deep breath and held his hand. “Damien, congratulations on your wedding.”
  • Since this man had offered her such a beneficial deal, putting on a façade would be self-degrading.
  • Perhaps due to the hot weather, his palms were damp and warm.
  • She retracted her hand and Damien glanced at his hand suspended in the air and retracted it as if nothing had happened.
  • He casually surveyed his surroundings and said nonchalantly, “The formalities are complete. Now, come home with me.”
  • “I didn’t bring anything. I want to go back first and come later.” Jane stated.
  • Damien slightly pursed his thin lips and when he turned his head, he noticed her expressionless face.
  • There was a degree of emotion in his light brown eyes, and he nodded. “Alright, I’ll see you off.”
  • “No need!” Jane declined. “Give me an address, and I’ll hail a taxi there later.”
  • Damien willingly agreed, “Sure, give me your phone number.”
  • “Why do you need my phone number?” Jane asked him warily.
  • Damien’s mouth curled slightly. “Isn’t it because you’re afraid of running away and not being found?”
  • Jane laughed and said, “Damien, don’t worry. I won’t run away.”
  • “Of course, you’re already my wife. Why would you want to leave me?” Damien nodded as if he had an epiphany.
  • She’s unsure if it’s her imagination, but this man occasionally manipulates her.
  • Regardless, she provided her cell phone number to him.
  • Damien saved the number on his phone in front of her and sent her the address via SMS.
  • “This is my cell phone number. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need anything.”
  • “Alright,” Jane replied with a nod.
  • She didn’t anticipate calling him.
  • “Then I’ll be going.” Jane nodded at him and turned to cross the street.
  • Damien watched her leave and a slight smile formed at the corners of his mouth.
  • He gazed at the red book in his palm, caressed it with his fingers, and then put it in his suit pocket, the closest distance to his heart.
  • After Jane left in a taxi, Damien also got into a taxi.
  • As soon as he sat down, he received a phone call. He didn’t know what the other person said, but the more he listened, the darker his expression became.
  • It wasn’t until he hung up that Duke asked cautiously, “Boss, is there a problem with the UK project negotiations?”
  • Damien’s expression was cold, and his tone was chilly, “It went unexpectedly smoothly!”
  • Duke was taken aback momentarily. If things went well, why was his boss upset?
  • It wasn’t until he heard Damien say, “Book a flight to London immediately,” that he vaguely understood why his boss was angry.
  • No one would be pleased about having to leave immediately after receiving the certificate.
  • However, did this prove that Damien truly takes this nearly absurd marriage seriously?
  • Jane resides in a secluded location, and she has taken up residence in a small dwelling that consists of one bedroom and one living room.
  • The edifice was constructed in the early days and does not have an elevator, but the rent is economical.
  • Despite the dilapidated exterior, Jane has made the interior cozy and welcoming with warm wallpaper and uncomplicated yet practical furniture.
  • As soon as she entered the abode, Jane tossed Baolian and the marriage certificate on the couch and headed straight to the bathroom.
  • While she was staying at the hotel, she didn’t have enough time to take a thorough shower, and she always felt unclean and uneasy.
  • She shed her garments, stood under the shower, shut her eyes, and scrubbed her body repeatedly with her hands soaked in shower gel.
  • The unfortunate event has already taken place, and she is powerless to alter it. Now, all she can think about is the future.
  • After half an hour, Jane emerged from the bathroom, changed into clean clothes, and reclined on the bed to unwind.
  • After a few minutes, an unfamiliar number called her.
  • She was hesitant for a moment but answered the call.
  • “Madam, have you packed your belongings?” A man’s unfamiliar voice inquired.
  • “Who is this?” Jane was unsure.
  • “I am Mr. Damien’s driver. You can call me Ludovic. Mr. Damien instructed me to pick you up.”
  • Jane wrinkled her forehead. Damien Wolfe?
  • He sent someone to pick her up, which was unexpected.
  • However, it does indicate that her shield’s existence is still valuable.
  • She replied, “Sure, I’ll tidy up right away. Just give me a minute.”
  • Jane packed a few clothes, dragged her suitcase, and exited the rental house.
  • Ludovic Trey, a young man who resembled her, treated her with the utmost respect.
  • There was no conversation during the drive, and the silence stirred up waves of anxiety in Jane’s tranquil heart.
  • Indeed, she was nervous.
  • Jane seldom paid attention to affluent families, but she was acquainted with the Wolfe family’s name. The family relationships in such a wealthy family must be quite complicated.
  • As someone of her status, she would undoubtedly not be acknowledged by her husband’s family. Will the Wolfes make things difficult for her when she arrives?
  • Filled with unease, Jane observed as the car entered the gates of Splendid Glory and eventually came to a stop in front of a single-family villa.
  • She disembarked and gazed up at the elegant and refined European-style villa before her.
  • Jane knew that the cost of living in Splendid Glory was exorbitant, and only affluent families like the Wolfe family could afford it.
  • “Madam, this way please,” Ludovic said respectfully, carrying her suitcase.
  • Jane nodded at him and made her way towards the door, her heart pounding with anxiety.
  • Upon entering, she noticed that the room was empty.
  • She turned to Ludovic, who was by her side, and asked suspiciously, “Why is nobody here?”
  • Before Ludovic could respond, a middle-aged woman emerged from the kitchen and upon seeing Jane, exclaimed, “Madam, you’re here!”
  • Jane nodded at her, although the term “madam” was unfamiliar to her, and said, “Hello, Aunty.”
  • “Madam, you can call me Eve. Please come in,” Evelyn greeted warmly.
  • Jane nodded and stepped inside.
  • As she looked around, she realized that the house was deserted and asked, “Is there nobody else at home?”
  • “Mr. Damien left for the airport an hour ago on a business trip, didn’t you know?” Evelyn asked, surprised.
  • Jane smiled, feeling slightly awkward. Wasn’t it strange that she didn’t know about this?
  • It would have been even stranger if she did know.
  • Evelyn realized her mistake and quickly added, “You must be hungry. Please have dinner soon.”
  • “I’m not very hungry,” Jane replied before asking, “Does the rest of the Wolfe family live here?”
  • “You mean the sir and madam? They live in the Wolfe family’s old house. This is Mr. Damien’s private residence,” Evelyn explained.
  • Jane nodded, realizing that her worries had been for naught.
