Chapter 9 Secrets of the Wallace Family

  • Clara knew she had made an unforgivable mistake.
  • Ryan continued to wear that icy, intimidating expression, exuding an aura that warned others to keep their distance.
  • With determination, Clara stepped forward. "Let's get a divorce! I won't take any of your property!"
  • Ryan's glare grew even more intense.
  • He had brought her home, and now she wanted a divorce.
  • Was she doing this just to provoke me?
  • Clara's thoughts became muddled with confusion.
  • "Why is he reacting like this? What does he want?"
  • Ryan said nothing and walked over to the cabinet, where he calmly put on his watch.
  • Clara, regaining her composure, raised her voice again. "I'm serious! Let's get a divorce!"
  • But before Ryan could reply, the door swung open with a bang, and Ms. Griffin and Teresa rushed in.
  • "Divorce? Ryan, are you still a member of the Wallace family? How can you act so irresponsibly? Are you trying to give me a heart attack?" Teresa said, her face flushed as she pounded her chest in frustration.
  • Clara, standing near the door, instinctively moved to help Teresa, gently patting her back to calm her. "Grandma, this is all my fault!" Clara said quickly, shaking her head.
  • Clara wasn't aware of the Wallace family's unique traits or their strict family rules. She was also unaware of the special gene that ran in the family, passed down only through the men.
  • The men of the Wallace family were born with black eyes, but their eyes would turn blue-black after their first sexual encounter with a virgin. Only after this would they be able to produce offspring; otherwise, they would remain infertile, regardless of how many women they slept with.
  • Because of this special gene, the Wallace family took marriage and family very seriously.
  • Their primary rule was that once a Wallace family member got married, divorce was out of the question.
  • Clara hadn't learned any of this yet. She was simply being truthful, believing she was doing the right thing. To Grandma, her actions seemed wise and considerate, but to Ryan, it felt like unnecessary drama.
  • "Grandma has done so much for you! And here you are! She is such a wonderful woman, and you…" Teresa began coughing, too upset to continue.
  • Ryan looked up in frustration, feeling at a loss for words.
  • Did Grandma even realize that I wasn't the one who brought up divorce? Who exactly was her real grandchild?
  • He stepped forward, gently helping his grandmother sit down, and soothingly patted her back. "Grandma, don't worry. There's no need to get upset; Clara's just a little angry with me."
  • Clara, confused, looked up, only to be met with Ryan's cold, piercing glare.
  • Grandma noticed this and immediately scolded Ryan with a tap on his shoulder.
  • "Don't you dare look at Clara like that! She's not one of your employees. Girls need to be treated with kindness. It's completely normal for her to be a little upset! When a woman entrusts herself to you, you need to be responsible for her, do you understand?"
  • Clara was deeply moved by Grandma's words.
  • For the past three years, she had experienced the harsh realities of life, and very few people had ever stood up for her. On the other hand, Ryan remained calm and patient, nodding without any sign of disagreement.
  • Later, the three of them went downstairs and shared a peaceful breakfast.
  • Since it was the weekend, everyone was relaxed. After breakfast, Ryan received a phone call and left for work, while Clara stayed with Grandma, taking her for a walk in the garden.
  • Throughout the morning, Clara listened to Grandma recount stories from the past. She occasionally joined in the conversation and took care of Grandma with genuine attention, serving tea and doing her best to be helpful.
  • During the day, Clara felt relaxed and content. Even though Ryan was around, he would remain silent and keep his distance. But when night came, her situation worsened.
  • Behind closed doors, Clara stood near the bed while Ryan lounged there, glaring at her with his cold, sharp eyes.
  • "I don't care who's behind this or what you're planning, but from now on, don't bring up divorce in front of Grandma. We'll keep up the act, and don't even think about trying to play any tricks!"
  • "I'm not!" Clara, tired of being accused, thought it over and replied, "Let's just get divorced. If you're only doing this for Grandma's sake, we can divorce in secret. I'll help you keep up the appearances for her, and I'll come whenever you need to keep her happy. Does that work?"
  • After all, she barely knew Ryan, and he was exactly the type of man she had come to fear the most. He was an arrogant and privileged heir.
  • Her relationship with Dominic had already scarred her deeply.
  • Clara no longer harbored any illusions about love, especially not with rich and powerful men.
  • Three years ago, as the daughter of the Hull family, she couldn't secure a marriage, let alone now as a penniless Clara.
  • She knew where she stood.
  • Ryan looked at her with disdain, chuckling coldly.
  • "Before you even think about divorce, learn about the Wallace family and understand our family rules. Tonight, keep your distance! Make sure not a single hair of yours touches me, or I'll throw you out!"
