- Jared was increasingly becoming a part of my life. He was over every weekend with his daughters, sometimes accompanied by his mother. She had told him she was dying and she would soon have to be moved to a hospital for proper care.
- It had been a sad moment for us, to watch the big, strong soldier collapse like a baby. Jared had wept on my shoulder when he was away from his mother. He had controlled his grief before his mother and daughters, but he could not continue to carry around the brave facade before the world. He had sobbed when we were alone in the house, as he sat, his hands cupped around a mug of coffee. I had moved to him, pulling him to my chest and he had laid his head on my breasts, weeping.
