• I was sitting in the dusty little office of my lawyer who had also been Jack's best friend. And my heart was pounding as I stared at him. The funeral had taken place a week ago, But I had hurried to town because Joe had called. He had asked me to come to the office on some urgent business.
• Something very important to discuss, he had said over the phone, his voice strained and sounding deeply unhappy.
• Now I sat across him. The morning sunlight streamed into his room, the dust mites dancing in the sun rays. Joe’s office was old, the weatherworn volumes lining his walls had not been opened in a long while. He was planning to retire and go on a cruise with his wife, Beth.
