Chapter 6 How Could I Possibly Care About Her

  • Lane Corporation towered over all other buildings as it stood majestically in the center of the city, symbolizing utmost power and glory.
  • A man stood tall before the french windows with his arms crossed. He stared down at the city below his feet, deep in thought.
  • “Mr. Lane, you're now the biggest shareholder in Adams Conglomerate after Mrs. Lane has signed the share transfer agreement as agreed after the two of you have been married for three years, as per Jeffrey Adam's last will. All properties under her name have also been transferred to your name. This is the notarized statement from the attorney. Would you like to have a look at it?”
  • Aiden's assistant, Finnegan Smith, respectfully handed a thick stack of documents to him.
  • Hearing that, Aiden frowned. Without even sparing it a glance, he murmured in a cold voice, “No. Take it away.”
  • I've schemed and plotted for so many years, marrying Ruth Adams whom I hate despite my repulsion toward her, and acting the loving husband for three years just for these shares. But now that I've finally gotten them, why does it seem as though... I'm not as happy as expected?
  • “Why don't you go out first, Finnegan? Aiden has been in a bad mood these few days. Let me keep him company alone.”
  • Sadie, who had been sitting on the sofa, struggled up on her crutches.
  • In a flowy white dress and black hair that hung to her waist, she seemed as pure as a budding jasmine with her bright smile.
  • On the whole, the only flaw was her unsteady legs. She had only taken a few steps before she lost her balance and stumbled.
  • Upon noticing that, Aiden swiftly rushed forward and helped her up in anguish. “Say, you should have just stayed still and not moved around. Just tell me what you need, and I'll get it for you.”
  • However, Sadie shook her head, her eyes shining like pools of glimmering water that drew people in. “I just wanted to go over and hug you since you look unhappy. But my legs just wouldn't cooperate and hurt with just a few steps. I'm sorry for having worried you.”
  • Distress swamped Aiden when he heard that. Hugging her tightly, he murmured guiltily, “I'm sorry, Sadie. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been pushed off the building by that vicious woman, impairing your legs that were born to do ballet!”
  • “Don't say that, Aiden. Ruth only pushed me off the building because she loved you too much and was afraid of losing you.”
  • At that, Aiden's jet-black eyes instantly flooded with rage, and his expression turned savage. “Haha, love? How ridiculous is this! If she truly loved me, she wouldn't have gotten into bed with another man the night before our wedding! Such a filthy and despicable woman is not worthy of love!”
  • He was exceedingly worked up at that moment, unlike his usual calm and rational self. In fact, it was as though he was a different person altogether.
  • Throughout the years, he always snapped and went ballistic every single time the scene of Ruth in bed with Jackson flashed across his mind.
  • His tantrum was tantamount to a child whose candy had been stolen, thus losing all sanity and wishing to burn the whole world down.
  • A trace of unease slithered into Sadie at the sight of his enraged expression. Her control slipped for a moment, and she commented, “Don't blame yourself anymore, Aiden. The doctor says that my legs will make a full recovery soon as long as I recuperate well and avoid any more major injury. We can even move our wedding forward. It's just a bit tricky since Ruth refuses to sign the divorce agreement...”
  • “She just had an abortion, so her body is still weak. I'll talk to her about the divorce after her confinement period.”
  • Aiden's brows were slightly furrowed, and his voice was threaded with a hint of impatience as he said that.
  • Stunned, Sadie gingerly questioned, “Aiden, you still care about her a lot, don't you?”
  • “You're reading too much into things! How could I possibly care about her?”
  • Disdain was written all over Aiden's face.
  • “Just admit that you care about her... Otherwise, you wouldn't have saved her from Mr. Zeal that day despite risking a breach of contract, nor would you have been in such a hurry to have the doctors perform a dilation and curettage on her upon learning that the baby had stopped developing in the womb, fearing an intrauterine infection. And now... you're worried about long-term sequela if she doesn't observe her confinement period for a full recovery, thus unwilling to bring up the divorce with her.” As Sadie spoke, she dashed away the tears trickling out the corners of her eyes.
  • Then, she pitifully added, “Actually, you don't have to divorce her if you're reluctant to part with her. You don't have to worry about me, for I'll be fine.'
  • “Don't be silly. I know what I'm doing,” Aiden asserted in a frigid voice.
  • He then released his hold on Sadie and gazed out the window.
