Chapter 15 She Should Die Instead Of You
- Sadie was being wheeled out of the emergency room when Aiden reached the hospital.
- The doctor wiped the sweat that had pooled on his forehead as he explained, “She overdosed on sleeping pills. If we didn't notice in time, she might be dead already.”
- There was an immense weight on Aiden's chest as he watched the frail woman lying on the bed. He asked gently, “Why did you do this?”
- Sadie coughed a couple of times in reply. Her lips were pale as she choked out, “I heard that Ruth went missing. It must be because I have ruined your marriage. I deserve to die. Since my legs are useless, and the doctor's already told me that I can never dance again, there's nothing left for me to live for!”
- Aiden's heart ached for her. He spoke apologetically as he clasped her hands in his. “That's rubbish. She's the one who has ruined our relationship. If she didn't try to kill you that day, your legs would have recovered by now. She should be dead, not you.”
- Aiden shook himself out of his stupor that very moment. How could I be so dumb as to miss Ruth? I shouldn't be worried about someone as cruel as her!
- Her Sadie's shoulders heaved as she wept crocodile tears. “I don't know why Ruth hates me so much. She pushed me off that building then, and now she wants to kill me. I guess I only have my mom to blame. She has caused Ruth's mom to die of a broken heart. Perhaps the only way I can make things up to her is to die like her mom.”
- “That's nonsense. You shouldn't be expected to pay for your mom's misdeeds. Her mom may have died because of your mom, but Ruth inherited all the shares from Adams Conglomerate. She definitely didn't draw the short end of the stick, and it's not a strong enough reason for her to exact revenge on you.”
- Aiden stated all of this coldly with nary a sense of compassion for his wife.
- There was, after all, a price to pay for Jeffrey Adams' philandering life.
- Aiden did not believe that Ruth was the victim in all of this. She emerged victorious while Sadie was the loser since she was the illegitimate child of the Adams family.
- And yet Ruth still wants to kill Sadie! That's too much! She's still pretending that she's the victim when she's the one trying to kill Sadie. That little disappearing act of hers is driving me mad! Just wait till I track you down, Ruth. I'll make you beg for my forgiveness.
- Aiden's phone rang.
- He answered immediately when he saw the caller ID.
- The person who called him spoke courteously, “Mr. Lane, we've found her. There's something you should know...”
- Aiden's expression darkened at the man's explanation. His fists were clenched so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
- The anger within him looked ready to erupt at the slightest trigger.
- “Aiden, what happened?” Sadie asked cautiously.
- Aiden had already stormed out of the room as if he could not hear her.
