Chapter 1 I Would Rather Save A Dog Than You

  • “I want a divorce!”
  • When Aiden Lane flung a stack of photos at Ruth Adams' face, she was serving up soup in the kitchen.
  • She cooked the chicken soup for almost three hours. It was an old folk remedy rich in nutrition while also being a kind of comfort food. She added some herbs and mushrooms into the soup, which rendered it rich and fragrant, providing warmth and nourishment.
  • She made it especially for Aiden. Since he was a notorious workaholic, he didn't eat at regular intervals; as a result, he often suffered from gastric. For that reason, she racked her brains trying to ameliorate his condition by seeking out renowned doctors and possible remedies. Every day, she made different soups for him to fortify his stomach.
  • At that very moment, the soup fresh from the oven was overturned on the floor, and steam wafted into the air.
  • Silently crouching, Ruth picked up the broken shards on the floor and threw them into the trash can without even glancing at the photos on the floor.
  • That was already the seventh time in the same month that he demanded a divorce from her after she signed over her shares in Adams Conglomerate to him.
  • She had no idea what exactly she did wrong that her once “model husband” suddenly turned so cold and indifferent. Nevertheless, all that she could do was to try to do better and compromise more than ever.
  • “You must be hungry. I'll get you some food.”
  • Like a king lording over his subject, Aiden glowered down at the woman crouched on the floor domineeringly. The more she remained placid in the face of his oppression, the more he was incandescent with rage. “Don't think that I can't do anything about it just because you're determined to ignore it!”
  • As he said that, he yanked her up from the floor forcefully. His voice was as cold as ice when he snarled, “Look how shameless you are with that man in the photos! You've been a sl*t since before we got married, and you're still sleeping around after we've been married for three years! In that case, why don't you just get out of my life?”
  • “I didn't do anything of that sort! It's all a misunderstanding. I can explain...”
  • Tears streamed down Ruth's face.
  • She wanted to explain things to Aiden, but he dragged her to the garage in the backyard of the mansion.
  • “Since you love sleeping around with other men, I'll grant you your wish!”
  • Slamming the car door shut, Aiden floored the gas.
  • Half an hour later...
  • The moment Ruth caught sight of a portly old man after being shoved into a room, her mind went blank, and panic seized her.
  • “What's the meaning of this, Aiden? Let me out of here!”
  • In the next instance, the old man hugged her from behind. “Don't be afraid, Baby. I'll treat you well since you're a gift from Mr. Lane.”
  • “Who are you? Get away from me. Don't touch me!”
  • As Ruth struggled, she fell onto the floor. She stared at her apathetic husband by the door, but it felt as though she was looking at a stranger she had never known.
  • While he was tall and handsome, he was exceedingly detached and distant, merely looking on coolly with an expression devoid of emotion.
  • His patience snapping, the portly old man grabbed her delicate ankle roughly with his pudgy hand. “You'd better behave! I didn't just sign the one-million contract with Lane Corporation for nothing, so don't even dream of leaving this room if you don't please me and make me happy tonight!”
  • Hearing that, Ruth kicked out and scrambled over to Aiden on her hands and knees like a frightened kitten. Clutching the hem of his pants with trembling fingers as though he was her last lifeline, she tearfully begged, “No, please save me, Aiden! Please save me, even if it's just for the sake of our past affections!”
  • “Save it, Ruth Adams! I'd rather save a dog than you!”
  • With contempt written all over his face, Aiden kicked her before he spun on his heels and left.
  • Outside the door, Sadie Adams—who bore some resemblance to Ruth—wore a worried expression as she sat in the wheelchair. “Don't you think we're going too far in doing this to her, Aiden?”
  • “You're just too kind, Sadie. We're not going too far at all, considering what she did to you three years ago. This is exactly what she deserves!”
  • Ruth's agonizing wails rang out behind Aiden, but he merely turned a deaf ear to her cries...
