Chapter 14 Seeking For Attention

  • In his rush, Aiden had expedited his hour-long journey home into half.
  • He parked his car in the garage and ran into the house without bothering to lock it.
  • The usually brightly lit mansion was shrouded in darkness.
  • Ruth was not bustling around the kitchen with an apron tied securely around her. The steaming plates of dishes that used to greet him from the dining table were absent. Most importantly, no woman was rushing excitedly into his arms upon his return. She had left like a fleeting breeze, and he had to deal with this lonely void by himself.
  • He stood in the middle of the living room. The dim lighting stretched out the shadow of his lonely figure across the room. The expensive furnishings had never seemed as cold and unwelcoming ever.
  • For the first time in his life, the mansion seemed much too large for him. She must have felt so lonely on those nights when I didn't come home.
  • Margaret walked into the living room at the sound of footsteps. She looked happy when she realized that Aiden was home.
  • “Mr. Lane, what a surprise! I thought Mrs. Lane had finally come home.”
  • Aiden turned around and stared at Margaret. Before he could rein in his concern, he blurted, “Hasn't she been home at all?”
  • “She hasn't, Mr. Lane. In fact, Mrs. Lane hasn't been home since your argument that night. Do you think she's in trouble? She hasn't been acting normal lately. She's been babbling so much nonsense that I'm worried she'll actually do something stupid.”
  • “Hmph, what stupid thing is she going to do anyway? She's just making a scene like last time to seek attention. She won't be able to play her same old tricks on me this time.”
  • Aiden expressed his sentiments viciously before stalking upstairs.
  • The bedroom felt cold and unhospitable as well. This space did not feel like a home at all.
  • He sat down on the bed and ran his fingers over the soft covers. The silk bedsheets felt incredibly smooth to his touch, and he could not help but be reminded of her soft skin.
  • He buried his head in the sheets and inhaled deeply. The familiar scent of jasmine assailed his senses.
  • He had shared this bed with Ruth for three years.
  • They had spent quite many days and nights enjoying each other's company in this bed as well.
  • Though he claimed to be disgusted by her, he could not deny how much he had enjoyed their lovemaking. It was like an addiction to him.
  • His heart pumped furiously as images of their romantic trysts filled his mind.
  • He was struck by a strong urge to enjoy her in this very bed. His lust was utterly insatiable.
  • His patience had run out. He pulled out his phone. It was time to track Ruth down.
  • He did not want to play hide and seek with her any longer.
  • His mind was consumed with a single thought. I must find her now!
  • He gave his orders over the phone and hung up in anxious anticipation.
  • Like Brad had said, he was in a position of incredible power and wealth. Tracking someone down was nothing but child's play to him.
  • Don't think you can play me for a fool, Ruth!
  • Aiden's phone rang barely ten minutes later.
  • He looked at the caller ID and frowned. He seemed disappointed and somewhat annoyed.
  • Sadie's doctor was calling him. He sounded distressed. “Mr. Lane, please come to the hospital now. Ms. Adams tried to kill herself!”
