Chapter 7 ''Heavy Emotions''
- "You see, Ted, Bethany didn’t love me. She was just using me to boost her popularity by dating someone like me," Greg said bitterly as he gulped down his beer that evening. Ted was the one person Greg confided his true feelings in.
- It was now two weeks after Bethany left the mansion, and Greg had not heard from her yet.
- "Can you believe I haven't heard from her since then? She went completely silent. She must have been really eager to leave me," Greg continued, his voice filled with frustration. "How can she be so inconsiderate, not even saying a word? Does it mean what we shared wasn't that important?" He poured more vodka into his cup.
- "Greg," Ted called out, reaching over to stop him from pouring more alcohol.
- In frustration, Greg stood up and drunkenly walked to his car. "Greg, Greg!" Ted called out, but all he got in response was a peace sign. Greg continued walking.
- "Hi Greg," a sweet, girly voice greeted.
- "Since when did you become a drunk?" the lady continued, her tone teasing. Greg squinted his eyes to see who it was and approached cautiously.
- "Michelle, is that you?"
- "Of course it is, Greg," Michelle answered proudly. "What are you doing here?" Greg staggered as he tried to stand upright. "Just leave me alone, let me be," his words slurred.
- This behavior was unlike Greg. He was the reputable business tycoon respected across the country, known for always having his life in order.
- Across the bar where Greg was, there was a figure lurking in the shadows, a paparazzi, turning and fumbling with their camera watching Greg struggle to unlock his car, visibly intoxicated.
- "Let me drive you home, Greg. You can't drive like this," Michelle insisted.
- "Who are you?" Greg slurred, his mind struggling to focus just after he identified.
- Michelle seized his keys, "Come on, I am taking you home" she said as she guided him to the passenger seat, the paparazzi snapping photos as they moved.
- During the ride, Greg remained silent. "You reek of cheap alcohol. Since when did you start drinking this stuff?" Michelle remarked, her disgust was evident.
- Greg paid no attention to her, he bent his head, leaning against the window; Greg thought of Beth and how she had never judged him. He remembered a time when he returned home drunk, and she had embraced him, drawn a bath, and cooked for him without a word of reproach. Until now, she had never criticized him.
- "Drop me off here," Greg abruptly demanded.
- "What? Are you serious?" Michelle responded incredulously.
- "I said drop me off here!" Greg yelled, spittle hitting the dashboard as he spoke.
- "Jeez, man, I was just trying to help," Michelle said, frightened. She pulled over to the side of the road.
- "I'll find my own way. My driver will pick up the car tomorrow," Greg declared, slamming the car door as he exited.
- Buzz! Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!
- "Griffin King a Drunk, Ex-lovers Caught Leaving a Bar Together, Is Mr. Griffin a Cheat?" These were some of the headlines dominating the media the next day.
- A million notifications continued to blink on Bethany’s phone. She wondered why her phone kept flickering as she prepared for her appointment with the doctor.
- She had made her decision to terminate the pregnancy. She didn’t want anything to do with the Griffins anymore. She wanted to start her life afresh, and she dreaded having to explain to her child what had happened to their father.
- As she left Alicia’s house, Bethany finally managed to grab hold of her phone. Messages and missed calls stared her in the face when she opened one of the messages there it was: a picture of Greg and Michelle, "is this Greg and Michelle ? " one of her friends asked,.
- Bethany felt her heart sink, the familiar rush of emotions flooded back just as it did the day she first saw them together again. "So they're making it public now," she murmured to herself, feeling a pang of pain in her chest.
- She switched her phone off, set it aside and headed towards the hospital. Deep in thought, she replayed what she had just seen, oblivious to the approaching car as she crossed the street. The honk jolted her out of her deep thought, and she screamed in fear as she was at the face of death.
- "Look where you're going, lady!" the man in the car angrily yelled.
- "I... I'm sorry," Bethany responded tearfully, waving her hands in apology.
- "Bethany!" Jason shouted from across as he ran towards her. Their neighborhood was so small that neighbors across the street could see what was happening. She could hear them murmuring in their distant conversations.
- Bethany ran away from Jason in fear, anger, and pain, avoiding any confrontation with him.
- "Beth... Beth... Beth!" he kept shouting until he finally gave up and allowed her to go.
- At the hospital, Dr. Murray insisted she goes for a scan, which Bethany assumed was part of her normal routine before understanding its purpose. The pregnancy was now four months along.
- I picked out something from the last samples we rana and I thought we confirm it before anything "Dr. Murray added upon seeing Beth.
- "This looks interesting," Dr. Murray said as she rubbed gel on Bethany's tummy. "I didn’t notice this earlier. I need to confirm something."
- "Um, Doctor Murray," Bethany began in a low tone, "I wanted to find out... I would like to terminate my pregnancy. I don’t wish to continue on this journey."
- "What? What did you say, Bethany? You've already come this far," Dr. Murray responded in shock.
- "Why do you want to terminate them after coming this far?" Dr. Murray continued.
- "Them?" Bethany thought to herself, unsure if she had heard Dr. Murray correctly.
- "They have passed the critical stage, which is the first trimester, and are now growing so well," Dr. Murray explained warmly. "I don’t know why you and Mr. Griffin would come to such a conclusion, but you can always put them up for adoption."
- "Dr. Murray, I notice you keep referring to the baby as 'they' and 'them'. Is there something I am missing?" Bethany asked, her voice tinged with confusion and concern.
- "Yes, Bethany," Dr. Murray announced gently, her emotions were evident. "You are carrying twins."
